  1. Why is it that certain areas of the Cortex on one Cerebral hemispheres will only receive information from the opposite side of the body. For example if a person has a stroke damaging areas of thier left motor cortex, than movement on the right hand side of the body will be affected. Surely having to cross over requires more neurons giving a slight, but measurable difference in reaction time?

    Sandwiches

I was once told by someone who worked in subway that I should never eat there becuase the staff have been known to 'tamper' with the food and are generally quite unhygenic. However I still go, subways just too nice, plus where else can you get food at three in the morning.

    Sandwiches

The best sandwiches are when you're feeling bored/crazy and you throw every ingredient in your cupboard together and discover it's actually tasty. A nice combo I discovered is Avacado, humous, cajun, ketchup, ham, mayo, pepper, fresh basil and lettuce all in pitta bread. Before you judge me, try it, it's delicious. My other favourites are... the classic tuna mayo, BLT and Corination Chicken mmmm
  5. 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat' is a great book. Oliver Sacks is probably my favourite author at the moment . I'm currently reading 'An Anthropologist on Mars' and recently read 'Awakenings' and 'My Uncle Tungsten' (his biography) which i'd highly recommend to anyone. Other books i'm reading are... 'Brainwashing - The Science Behind Thought Control' by Kathleen Taylor and .. 'Men who stare at goats' by Jon Rohnson which is hilarious. From Amazon..
  6. my mistake, I always confuse formaldhyde as ethanal not methanal.
  7. I always understood that formaldhyde is formed in the body anyway, as ethanol is oxidised by alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver. So why isn't formaldhyde as metabolite toxic? Is it that its not present long enough in the body before being oxidised again ?
  8. Is that the same film as Leon when he gives the pulled grenade pin to the guy?
  9. There's some great over the top gore in 'ichy the killer'? This scene in partiular always makes me laugh..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixuKtdDRr-A
  10. I tend to read two or three books at a time which I place at different places in the house so I read each equally. I currently have 'An Anthropologist on Mars' by Oliver Sacks on my bedside table 'Men Who Stare at Goats' by Jon Ronson to bring to work and 'Brainwashing' by Kathleen Taylor in my toilet.
  11. I agree and I too wouldn't call a company corrupt for overpricing thier products, however i'm referring to claims of exploitation that I think anyone would class as corrupt. The claims I often hear, some of which i'm skeptical of others not, are things like pharmaceutical companys exploiting third world countries through unpaid drug trials, creating psuedo illnesses or overstating symptoms for sales and bribery to cover up illness and deaths associated with thier products. Sorry I can't be more specific but thats the reason for this thread as so far everybody I have spoken to has been too vauge with thier claims. Yet the sheer number of people who have made them leads me to believe there might be some truth in it.
  12. When people ask me what area of work I would like to go in to, I usually mention my interests in Chemistry and Pharamacology and talk about how I would like to go into something related. Fairly often when I say this the person will suddenly look deadly serious and say 'what ever you do don't work for a pharmaceutical company, they're evil you know'. I always ask why but so far everyone has just bantered on vaugley never really giving me a satisfactory answer to my question. So do you agree? Is the pharmaceutical industry corrupt?
  13. I think it should just be simplified to 'Don't do Drugs or Alcohol in excess, you'll end up dancing like an idiot and regretting it in the morning.'
  14. -Wear odd socks, nobody notices and you don't have to waste time matching them up. -Hunger is the best sauce. -Drink cycling is just as dangerous as drink driving. Same goes for skateboarding and rollerblading.
  15. Actually before today I hadn't but I was inspired by your post and made one for lunch today. I ran out of baugettes and cheddar so I had to improvise and use pitta bread and goats cheese. It was tasty. I'm tempted to make another but I've run out of tuna. Hmm I wonder if sardine melts would be nice.
  16. Cooking is such a great past time. In my house there's never really anything readymade to eat so i've got into the habit of cooking meals for lunch or just when i'm feeling stressed/bored. I'm suprised i'm not overweight by now. For simplicity I usually cook pasta and tomato sauce as it can all be done in about 15 minutes and you can alter it quite easily depending on what ingredients you have. To make the sauce it's quite simple. Fry some garlic and onion in olive oil, add a tin of tomatoes along with herbs and spices i.e. basil, oregano, chilli, bay leaf, parsley etc and a little red wine vinegar. Then bring to the boil and simmer for about 10-15 minutes. You can also add things like mushrooms, cheese, wine, olives etc or if you want to make a puttanesca (sp?) sauce, add capers, and anchovies along with the garlic. Tuna pasta's also a great easy recipe. Just heat a tin of tuna in butter and olive oil along with chilli and lemon and add it to the pasta. When i'm feeling a little more ambitous I cook alot of curries but I'm feeling lazy at the moment so i'll post a good recipe later. ...mmm I think I may go eat.
  17. I think 'Interrobang' is my new favourite word
  18. Whats 'Ataur Rasool' or whatevers printed faintly on the background?
  19. Yes like Noradrenaline, Adrenaline/Epinaphrine can act as both although IIRC the fight or flight response is only stimulated through it's action as a hormone.
  20. This one of those puzzles which some people get straight away but others spend ages over. It's called Mrs Tilly and you have to work out what Mrs Tilly likes and what she dislikes. Ok i'll start.... Mrs Tilly likes to giggle but not to laugh. Mrs Tilly likes to be seen but never heard. Mrs Tilly likes the Moon but not the Sun Mrs Tilly likes darkness but not the light Mrs Tilly likes the unnecessary and hates the ordinary. If you work it out add your own one.
  21. On other forums i've seen 'view unanswered posts' which I thought was a good idea. Any chance having something similar on SFN?
