  1. A red shift requires movement. Consider an ambulance coming towards u b4 driving away. the siren would fluctuate in frequency depending on the position of the ambulance. With the static universe, like tholan said, there would be no redshifts bcoz therez no movement to change the spectral frequency
  2. quite interesting. Thanks 4 da info
  3. I found out that the red shift is a product of the doppler effect. is CBR the result of the same phenomenon? btw. i found the last post a bit difficult to interpret. could u explain it a bit plainer plz.
  4. Not really flat but rather a cube shape. if u went too far, they thought you'd fall off into an abyss. It was the greeks who saw the earth's shadow on the moon and noted that the earth was indeed round. Pretty smart for mediocre technology eh
  5. I observed an experiment the other day where a magnet was immersed in liquid nitrogen and placed in a petri dish. Next, a small ball-bearing was placed in the petri dish just above the magnet and I was rather intrigued as it floated a few millimeters above the magnet. i wanted to know the theory behind this, in other words, why does this happen? My theory so far (this is only a guess) is that liquid nitrogen distorts the magnetic field so that it pushed the ball bearing upward instead of attracting it. Is this right?
  6. What is the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction?
  7. Thanks, i was in a rush when i wrote the question and 'quick question' was the only thing that came into my head
  8. Umm I got this question but dont really know what to do with it. ==> Astronauts in a space capsule orbiting the earth at a height of 900km experience weightlessness: hence the gravitational field due to the earth must be zero at that altitude. It says to include calculations in my answer but i dont know what calculations would be involved. i'm guessing that the statement is wrong and must be proved so by using calculations. can u help me?
  9. If the universe wasnt expanding, what will happen regarding a) red shifts in galaxy spectra b) the temperature of cosmic background radiation
  10. I'm sure you can at least get number c, its easy. As for the chloride question, dont worry, noone came close to getting it right other than phil
