  1. Check out the lecture:

    and example question:

    http://www.chembuddy.com/?left=pH-calculation-questions&right=pH-weak-acid-q1

    pKa = 3.45

    However, calculation for 27M solution will be not accurate, as the activities start to play important role.

    Try BATE to calculate pH.

  2. Put some sodium bicarbonate into aquarium, add some vinegar. CO2 evolves yet it is heavy enough to stay in the aquarium.

    Next, do some soap bubbles (how they are called in English?) and let them float in the aquarium - they will float on the CO2 cushion.

    Get some jar, get CO2 from the aquarium (seems funny, as you are trying to get "nothing" into the jar) and pour it onto the light candle.

  3. Some of you are aware of the fact I have already prepared two chemical calculators (see signature). I am planning to extend the line of programs and I have several ideas about what could the next calculator do. However, before starting work I decided to do a quick poll:

    What type of calculations would you like to have automated?

    Which calculations are the most tedious?

    Which calculations are eating most of your time, regardless of the fact that you know how to do them?

  4. im pretty sure NaOH wouldnt react with Al2O3

    You are pretty wrong - aluminum is amphoteric and it reacts both with acids and bases. Al2O3 is stable and highly resistive to corrosion only in pH of around 7. Acid rain or alkalic soap solution are enough to remove oxide layer. New layer is created immediately, but if there is enough acid or base you will be able to dissolve aluminum completely.

  5. Ethylene glycol can be replaced be glycerine if I recall correctly.

    You just inject glycol into the dry permanganate. It gets hot due to glycol oxidtaion until it starts to burn. Ping pong ball is made of nitrocelluloid so once it starts to burn it gives long flame.

    We made smoke bombs from ping pong balls when I was a kid :)

  6. ??? Table salt doesn't contain iodine - unless it is iodine enriched, but even then I doubt it makes sense to use it a iodine source... Add some chlorine water to convert iodide to iodine and some nonpolar solvent for extraction.
