Well, after getting rid of ESET I'm stuck with using Windows Defender. IT looks like its downloading definitions often, we'll see.

AVG is just one of many free downloads.
Others that come to mind, Avast and Avira.

I used to use Avast and AVG over the years, the new win defender looks pretty good actually. I did some controlled tests and it prevented simulated attacks from my server downtown. I have a psychological problem using any antivir software now after having to rollback every day for 3 weeks due to the ESET issue. Im sure I will cure myself eventually though, thanks for the tips MigL.

Is there a reason for it besides the obvious UK/US thing?

    3. StringJunky

      StringJunky

'incy wincy' is the beginning of a child's poem.  I notice, on searching, there's 'eensy weensy' and 'itsy bitsy' spider poems as well.

Probably just because of particular poems where they originated.

    4. koti

      koti

Confirms my initial predictions. The reason I ask is that I watch a lot of toddler movies on youtube lately...in some versions they sing "incy wincy" with UK accents and "itsy bitsy" with US accents.

  8. Win10 update killed all my browsers. Newtork is there, pings go through, all the browsers are dead. Its a known and defined problem apparently but nothing worked including reinstalling network drivers from USB (yes I flushed DNS and did all the CMD procedures) I had to rollback to previous OS version. I don't even know which update did it, I don't have time to look now. Beware of the latest Win10 updates!

You should try going to website by IP, entering f.e.

http://127.0.0.1 (install XAMPP if you don't have Apache installed locally *) or f.e. http://151.101.113.67

This way you will verify whether it's DNS issue, or TCP/IP packets are blocked (firewall?),

whether it's Internet related problem or it's even local HTTP server not working..

  9. Our 18 month old became recently as distructive as a black hole. He grabs things, imediately runs away at light speed laughing like an evil space lord and boom - the object is gone into oblivion. He fell asleep, we wanted to watch a movie but I can’t get the amp to work... aparently the evil space lord took care of that too.

That is the kids job, my oldest started using my stereo component cabinet as a play refrigerator when he was around 3. Poured apple juice into the power amp, talk about a mess! Took me hours to clean out the sticky juice and replace capacitors...  gotta love em!

  12. Blade Runner 2049 - Audio-Visually it's absolutely stunning, they managed to keep the original, dark, utopian vibe alive and even go a step further. The story is simple and revolves around human identity yet it triggers you to think. Instant classic in my opinion.

  13. Say an undercover government agent attends an anti government protest shouting and pretending to be them. Is this a provocation or is there a different, more accurate word?

I think I know now where my confusion came from. In English, provocation is the act of provoking (at least a couple of dictionaries from the top of google say so) wheres in my language not quite. "Provocation" has a more clear political meaning in Polish to a point. Its defined as a sneeky act done by an agent to do damage etc. Both words "Provocation" and "Prowokacja" are translated to each other directly but the carry a little bit different meaning.

    3. geordief

      geordief

Same in French; "une provocation" has the sneaky political meaning as well as the more general meaning.

In any case , in English the sneaky political  meaning of "a provocation" is quite an important one and certainly is clear when used in context.

I seem to remember from my time in France when Polish people would manage to escape from the Soviet bloc that  there was a connection between the Poles and the French that was perhaps partially reflected in the language)

An intelligent, normal looking guy, physics PHD, worked in CERN, no wife no children, no financial problems, convinced he's a looser, depressed and on the virge of suicide. We only ban people for persistent of egregious violations of the rules, not for posting topics that spark debate. You could always start a thread with a synopsis of the film.

    4. koti

Yes. And since me being the one to open a thread on this would serve as a catalist for my potential persistency of egregious rule violations I shall not do it. BTW...have you watched this documentary ?

  21. There is a flaw in the forum engine. I am unable to open a thread in the trash can section of the forum. I would like to be able to do that to lure some of the users to discuss things there...like Pymander & John Lesser.

    1. Show previous comments  3 more
    2. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

The trash can isn't there for members to post in. It's there for staff to move posts and threads that don't belong anywhere but. Having it open to members would be pandemonium, since the whole point is that the threads there are utter rubbish, deemed not suitable for discussion.

Furthermore, I find your attitude disheartening. As frustrating as some members are, you should always hope that they improve rather than continue as is or get worse.
