  1. There is a difference between wearing a bit of make up to look presentable and getting cosmetic surgery to improve your looks through. Obviously most people want to look presentable. Vanity is frowned upon because it reflects selfishness because one who is vain constantly thinks of themselves and others perceptions of them; it's viewed as being superficial and shallow. Most people would agree it's personality, attitude, intelligence, kindness, benevolence, etc that makes one attractive, rather than a made up exterior.

It won't stop you from making new mistakes though
  3. It happens everywhere though to varying degrees. I understand the reason behind it, but healthcare professionals have an ethical responsibility too. I obviously agree that ultimately people should be free to make their own choices, even if they are motivated by insecurity and vanity, however, I believe counselling should be suggested, along with transparency. I understand that they do in most cases disclose the risks involved in surgery, however, they should also provide research on the effectiveness of plastic surgery, or at least discuss the possibility that is will not be an effective solution to self esteem. This is where counselling would be beneficial.
  4. Reoccurring nightmares about exams. I almost miss the other themes; monotony is never fun.

well , when I was complaining relevant to these statements , my friend wisely said to me "Yes, that is the system and you can't beat the system. The best you can do is to find a way to make the system work for you.". I would add an inportant point to this comment: I highly recommend that you not miss your happiness/fun. in my opinion ,studying hard is also great.maybe you need to be more optimistic or more positive , and of course it is required studying hard to success your goals,...

  5. Frauds and scams have existed in health and medicine for a long time. Markets for non-existent medical/health problems are created all the time and surgery is not exempt. Unfortunately in the last decade or so medical tourism has caused an increase in people undergoing plastic surgery because the cost factor becomes less of a limitation. This is particularly concerning because some surgeries, such as abdominoplasty (marketed at mothers and people who have lost large amounts of weight) is classified as a major surgery. I should think if you're opting for a major surgery, cost should be less of a deciding factor than the expertise of the surgeon and the operating facilities.
  6. I disagree; although, our definitions of 'purpose' may differ. I'm a humanist and I see my 'purpose' as purely leading an ethical existence; essentially to act out of common interest. To avoid a long-winded response, even if your entire purpose is just to be kind and benevolent, that is still living with a purpose.
  7. It's not frowned upon because it's a high risk procedure but because of the image it portrays; others often view it as an indicator of insecurity or vanity. It depends on why one is opting to undergo plastic surgery primarily. I believe society doesn't frown upon reconstructive surgery and in come instances, it may be extremely beneficial to have surgery if you've been in an accident, such as a motor accident or in a fire. In this case, it can vastly improve self-esteem and help cope with the trauma of the event by eliminating the physical evidence the best you can. In instances where patients lose a great deal of weight, it may be psychologically beneficial to undergo body contouring to get rid of excess skin. It's an exaggeration to say cosmetic surgery is frowned upon in general, it largely depends on the reason and whether it's linked to vanity or insecurity. I do find it mildly concerning that I am seeing more cosmetic surgery advertising targeting insecurities, especially women after child birth. It's natural to have imperfections, especially as you age and unfortunately it creates a market because youthfulness and beauty is important to varying degrees for most people. It's important to be content with yourself and focus on good health, both mental and physical rather than opting for something drastic which will most likely only be a temporary solution before you find something else to be insecure about. Confidence is what is attractive.
  8. Roundabouts are great, until you enter a massive multi-lane one and you forget about indicating because you're freaking out about being in the wrong lane. If you're me, you have a panic attack and slam on the breaks. Road etiquette was so different in the US, I learned that when you indicate to change lanes, people will automatically let you in but you must do so swiftly. In Australia, you're lucky if the third or fourth car lets you in and if you try to push in, you'll experience authentic Australian road rage. That's nice of you! The last time I was in the US all I ate was American Mexican food (gringo?), I'm really showing my ignorance here. Mexican food is just not the same in Australia, it's all so light an healthy here. I had chilli con carne with cornbread for the first time and it was possibly the best thing I've eaten.
  9. I'm concerned that you're only deterred due to the legal restriction and not because you have a moral qualm about exploiting women. This is harassment; the law does not always correlate with morality. What upsets me profoundly by your posts is how little empathy you show towards women and their right to privacy. I'm glad we live in a society where we are (mostly) protected by the legal system, but online I see another world. It frightens me.
  10. Despite being seemingly 'tolerant', we seem to be less accepting of behaviours outside of the norm by seeking to put a label on it which isolates the child more. I understand that ASD is a serious condition and we shouldn't take it less seriously because it's been over-diagnosed but certainly greater observation should be made before giving a diagnosis. Aside from the great emotional impact, it's also a financial concern for both parents and schools as they will need to implement differentiated course material, hire specialist aids and train existing staff. It's fundamental that children with additional needs get the help they need but with budgets in many state schools being scarce, it's difficult for students with genuine additional needs to receive the assistance they need.
  11. You think they're going to want to go out with you after they've found out you've been spying on them?
  12. Non-consensual voyeurism is a crime in many countries; not to mention it's unethical and to be honest, quite sick. I'm sure there are legal reenactments online if that's what you're into, but violating other people's rights for your own pleasure is just wrong.
  13. You don't see 'checking out hot girls' through a hidden camera without their consent as a bad purpose?
  14. That's very unlucky if it actually struck your window! o.o The girls at school used to say red attracted the magpies (I've not seen any evidence for this). However, I've unfortunately been the victim of many swooping magpies, even when not wearing red.
  15. Perhaps you can link the article? without more information I can't give you the exact reason. I suspect that they were somewhere isolated and lightning (usually) strikes the tallest structure. It the shelter was constructed with metal, then this would also conduct electricity. To answer your second question, if a lightning bolt strikes you directly then the very large amount of energy which passes through your body will result in internal burns. It depends on the strength of the bolt; it may kill you instantly, or result in injuries of varying degrees.
  16. There is a high correlation between higher education (especially postgraduate) and non religiosity, also, older generations are more religious. You'll find scientists are less religious than other professions, however, that doesn't mean that because you're a scientist you must therefore be an atheist. The younger generation of scientists, especially those under thirty will have a higher proportion of non religious identifiers. It seems that people are just more surprised when scientists are religious, rather than there being a high portion of religious scientists.
  17. Phi, hopefully self-driving cars will solve your traffic woes. Alternatively, you can join the cycling high club and whiz through the morning crawl.
  18. I've never heard of anything scientific related to wearing red during thunderstorms and it sounds very much like an old wives tale. She does have a point about staying inside, however. You're much safer inside because the current is directed to the ground. If you're really paranoid, then don't use any electrical devices/appliances with a wire or stand near electrical wiring. Getting struck by lightning is very unlikely though, so it's not something you need to be concerned about.
  19. I was very surprised when I visited US cities, there are so many overpasses, lanes and bridges. I don't remember seeing many roundabouts, if any at all. I was very anxious driving there and the least of all because you drive on the wrong side of the road!
  20. I wonder if this is perhaps because metabolic rate increases when the air temperature is very cold? Previous studies have linked increased metabolic speed to increased chances of having a nightmare because it signals the brain to be more active. I can't find any reliable research that supports your post and link.
  21. If a picture is worth a thousand words, it may be more efficient.
  22. It is the main contributor to global warming; mostly from CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) but also methane and Nitrous oxide. As Swansnot already stated, it traps heat. Different greenhouse gases trap different amounts of heat. For example, methane traps more heat per molecule than CO2, but there is a lot less methane in the atmosphere than CO2 so it does less damage overall as a result. There are more heat-trapping gases but there is less concentration of them atmosphere. Though, there are much more intelligent people here who might be able to explain it better than I.
  23. I had to Google what Instagram was.
  24. The article is four years old; I'd be interested in a further evaluation or update on progress. I am much more interested in neuroscientific approaches as opposed to psychoanalytic ones; although I don't discount the latter entirely. It certainly seems like they're on the right path.
