Gees, since I was a kid the only thing I have wanted is to feel connected to people again. I don't. And have not been able to form one meaningful connection with anyone. Apparently this is a problem here in las vegas, when surveying random people on the street they found vegas had the lowest number of overall people people say they trusted. I almost certainly have chemical imbalances, because the standard reward system in my brain doesn't work, I don't even feel a sense of accomplishment when I achieve something I have worked on for a long time. It's just something else I finished and now I need to find something else to fill the time. But, I don't believe pills are the answer, they are AN answer, and maybe one I will try eventually. But I consider the brain a computer, and philosophy to be an operating system, I may not be wired normally but there should be a philosophy that allows me to function. Also, to be clear, Stoicism did not help me quash my emotions. The world is a really fucked up horrible place, and if anyone steps back and really contemplates how bad it truly is the horror of it is enough to make me want to curl into a ball and sleep forever. Stoicism showed me that, people who view the world this way, and there are many, HAVE to quash their emotions.

I am going to assume that is short for Dr. Pepper. And yes, it does make the world taste better. I have tons of hobbies, I am a skilled and ranked magic player, I am a certified computer technician, I play league of legends, hearthstone, team fortress 2, starcraft 2, overwatch (when it was in beta for 2 days), and many others. No on the relationship stuff, as I told you, I literally cannot relate to anyone. I am not a virgin, I have had girlfriends, but it's just like the games, or science, or my random curiosities, just distractions to keep my mind off the issue. geordief, I do not understand most of your post.

Oh I cut away from religion over a decade ago, and that wasn't too hard. Ophiolite, it's kind of complicated to explain if you haven't experienced it. I find the world interesting, I have tons of questions, and it's these things that keep me distracted from my overall sense of boredom. People are predictable and boring, I find I literally cannot associate with anyone, even my closest friends are not at all like me. I am not at all trying to say I am superior and watching lesser humans from on high because some people know me and can predict me very well too, I am also predictable and boring, that's part of it. Life, is predictable and boring, knowing the general scheme politics WILL take, knowing how each day at your job WILL be, etc. Maybe I spend too much time thinking, but everything is way too predictable, and simple, and boring. Not the natural world, not science, but day to day life and my interactions with everyone. This is actually a weird meta, I am turning this exact feeling I am having into one of my curiosities about the world. Rereading my initial post. The "long mental sigh". I have met a lot of people when I was younger. A child, looking at adults, and wondering what the hell happened to them, or if they were just dead inside, or if I only saw part of them. Is this the nihilism that led into nietzche's works? I am trying to speed along my mental progression past all of this stuff. I have read the works, why does it take time to experience?

Something just "being" is an example of meaninglessness, as it lacks inherent meaning. I am not trying to imply that a life with inherent meaning is less boring, I don't think it would be. And yes I have checked out Albert Camus, it's a pretty interesting take, but I can't really embrace absurdism. I think there may be some variant of that idea that would resonate with me, but it wouldn't be a humorous one.

I am not going to commit suicide. This is not a plea for help. Please stay on topic for the question I am asking. I already know life is meaningless, and when I was younger I used to suffer from "dark" depressions where the thought of living was unbearable. I got older, learned a lot about Buddhism, and Stoicism, and they helped give me a lot of perspective. It took me a long time to come to accept how inherently bad the world is, and not want to just fall apart under the thought. Now, I can deal with the thought of getting up every single day without anything in my life improving (which is saying a lot because I have literally nothing I care about), and still get up everyday without it bothering me. But this has brought in a new thought. Why should I? Not, whats the point, I know there isn't one. I am not living for anyone else, no one would care at all if I died, but that isn't what I am talking about either. Instead of it being this "unbearable" thought, of how empty and meaningless everything is. Now I just have this long mental sigh. I bought the ticket and got on the ride, I am not going to jump off half way, mostly because I committed myself to never taking that way out when I was younger. My commitment will hold true but I don't know why I should besides that? I have seen what life has to offer and I am not impressed or interested. In anything. Does anyone else feel this way and what do you do to cope with the boredom? I legitimately wake up everyday and hope something will happen to either kill me, or at least make life more interesting. I don't even care if it was a terrorist attack. I have lived through pain, and fear, and uncertainty of whether or not I would live, and I can honestly say all of them are preferable to boredom.

Could magnets substitute gunpowder in guns?
TheGeckomancer replied to angushall19's topic in Engineering
For batteries, I was mainly referring to handguns and whatnot. You would not want to carry a diesel generator on your back to use a rifle. I honestly don't know much about the energy density or capacity of fuel cells. -
Stop.

I am by no means an expert in this field but I think you need to specify circumstances. I know efficiency and effectiveness change ENTIRELY based on circumstances. There is a thing called an ion thruster that can get up to 80% thrust efficiency, but from what I know about it the thrust is insanely small. Which is FINE for space travel, where forces that reduce momentum are minimized. In any atmospheric condition that that ion thruster becomes less than worthless.

This is the only forum I hang out on. I do not know how to multi quote. I just woke up and I was leaving for work. I apologize for not giving a more thorough response. If you want to tell me how to quote in parts, cause I can't get multiquote to work properly I would LOVE that. I would feel less nebulous and able to more easily address individual points.

Lots of speculation, but your answer is interesting and has some really cool ideas. I like the way you grouped everything. Gonna think on this a bit. -
Thats only the outcome I am painting for a society that keeps trying to cover up it's deep issues. And we DO NOT control our government. Politicians are put in power by politicians and corporate owners. This is a different discussion but the political system is so corrupt it's basically irredeemable, I just don't support an armed revolution at this time, it hasn't crossed the no return point yet. Go learn about gerrymandering, you don't get a say in who is elected. You get to pretend you have a say. And the elected officials usually don't even have a say in policy, their owners tell them what to do. We are an elitist extreme aristocracy. We have lords and owners, we just don't use those words. Also, you never made clear your stance on what should be done with guns. Others in this topic have been arguing for bans. If you have a different stance it's better to state it than let me assume.

The fact that we are ran by the very worst examples of humanity possible. There is a bizarre dichotomy to politics, especially in the united states. People who want to make the world a better place know that you cannot do that through politics in the united states. And those that just want the benefits will promise anything, smile, and woo the public, while eating out of the hands of corporate owners. Not that the people are not JUST as at fault. Like children any comforting lie from the grown ups and we do what we are told. I am more disgusted by the population than the ruling class in fact.

You can believe that but it goes against everything every AI specialist, computer programmer, biologist and pretty much everyone else thinks. You are ascribing a "magical" property to human consciousness. There isn't. -
First. You guys keep assuming you will "reduce guns" you won't even reduce them. And how exactly are you going to track a gun with no purchase history, and no traceable signature rifling? First of all. You are delusional if you think anyone is giving up their gun just because someone says so. I imagine texas legit trying to secede over that or declaring war. Few things. First of all. 3d printed guns are already cheaper and just as good as store bought guns. Why would that trend reverse? It doesn't matter if guns are banned or not. As 3d printers get better why would this suddenly become more expensive or difficult? And actually. I don't care about guns. My argument this whole time has been guns are not that dangerous. You can only kill a couple dozen people. My concern is the future of technology. I can MAKE my own gun at home in a few hours and go kill people. What about the next "version" of the gun? The next more concealable more lethal weapon? Banning may or may not work, depending on how exotic the materials are to make it. But I am terrified at the idea of people having the next weapon after guns, without any of the humanization required for us to possess it. And I forgot who said it, but someone made the argument something like, we live in the now or something. Short sighted policy and social decisions are directly responsible for the massive degradation america has experience, is more reactive short sighted policy the answer? Guns have been more common than cars in the US for over 100 years. Only recently have mass shootings been a problem. Why is banning guns even something people are talking about instead of whats going on in our society that's making people lash out at society? The more I listen to counter arguments the more I am hearing "it's easier to ban guns" no one is saying it but no one is addressing the question. The easy way out is the bad one. BTW. I do not own a gun. If they are banned I WILL HAVE ONE. Because I don't trust the government with weapons and not myself. I am more responsible, and capable than our government or military. I don't kill 10 civilians while trying to get 1 terrorist with drone attacks. This is another upsetting thing. Unless we disband our military and eliminate weapons at every aspect of society I am not okay with this. It just allows much easier military occupation and control of americans. I am not paranoid, not saying that is the definite path of society, but only an idiot doesn't realize it is a potential path we are at right now. Allowing a weapons ban is a BIG step towards a military state. And I would like someone to answer me WHY they should have them and not me when I know I am more responsible, and less likely to kill innocents? Basically, until Americans have control of their government taking away guns just takes away our only backup means of ever getting it back. Or. A much better way of saying this, the most sociopathic, disgusting members of our society have access to the most weapons and even discretion on the usage of military personnel as it is. Do you want to make the discrepancy worse (not that it banning guns will actually get rid of any of them but if it did)? And how do you guys even propose to make this ban happen. You going to go search every home in the united states? I would be all for much much much more stringent gun registration laws. Maybe even GPS and identifying chips in them. I am for every possible precaution to make people safer (not that safety should EVER be our first concern as a society, there are more important ideals), as long as they are legitimate precautions that make people safer and don't set us up for long term failure. Like I said, if people have impulse control issues now with guns, which are not only not the most lethal weapon you can have right now but also a dumb one. Again. I just need a mounted camera, a bomb, and a drone. I can kill more people faster than you can with your gun with no witnesses. We need a better society, with more empathy, that cares for the mentally ill, and reaches out to those who feel isolated. That's what we have to have. People are becoming empowered by technology to inflict harm. The reality is those that feel they are being persecuted or isolated from society don't have to take it anymore. So either society catches up to that reality, or things get a lot uglier.

Nothing about you experiencing more pain makes biology a pseudoscience. I am sorry that you are in pain but that is a really bad statement to make for a lot of reasons. Pain is very subjective. I have usually been considered tougher than other people in my life. And tolerance levels change completely. When I was in the the army, I was suffering from a severe migraine from severe dehydration, I checked into the troop medical center and they asked me on the pain scale where I was. I rated that an 8 out 10, at the time for me it was. I have experienced MUCH worse pain since then. That would rate a 5 on my scale now. I broke my ankle one time, had no medical insurance and just a job I HAD to show up for. I broke it on one of my fridays after work. I recuperated for the weekend, and went back to pushing carts at Albertsons on my monday. It was excruciating, but it totally changed my perspective on pain. Over the weekend I would have put that at a 9, no way no how was I doing anything but trying not to scream. But when necessity reared it's ugly head I realized I was at more of a 7. Pain is VERY subjective. You may just think you are experiencing more pain.

What is the evolutionary advantage of tooth pain for humans or any primates for that matter? No one from the Primate order besides humans has ever had the ability to treat tooth pain, and we only got better at stopping tooth pain than inflicting it (in attempts to alleviate it) in the last 200 years or so. I get the overall purpose of pain. If something is injured you nurse it, go easy wait for it to heal. Teeth don't do that. All the pain does is decrease your ability to function, drain energy that could be used for survival tasks, and make eating harder.

That's a bold claim. I feel pretty confident that I am more intelligent than a dog, and that a dog is more intelligent than a guava fruit. -
Even attempting to lie is a sign of intelligence. Success is just a sign of more intelligence.

I thought of another example. Trying to comprehend AI. We are the creators of the concept. And the ones working on making it. But the best of the best of the best admit to having no real idea how a true AI would think. This is a weird one, by my definitions it's simultaneously a human and nonhuman concept. -
Can Science explain everything in the universe without a God?
TheGeckomancer replied to Henry McLeod's topic in Religion
I can't even..... You either intentionally disregarded the meaning of every sentence and just responded to my words. Or... I don't know... I can't deconstruct this into meaningful sentences that are actual responses to what I said. I will clarify. You have been saying over and over religion allows you to visualize the world in a special way and have a special point of view. How is it not a prideful illusion to think your view is unique compared to everyone who used to think the same as you? And I never said YOU didn't get a choice. I DIDN'T get a choice as a kid. I was raised christian..... I am not going to try to read anymore from this... It's actually causing me pain. -

I thought about giving death as an example alongside nothingness in my opening post. But I deemed that as too much approaching a human concept because it only exists personally. You can imagine the death of other things no problem, it's only the with the self that death becomes unapproachable. -

TheGeckomancer replied to TheGeckomancer's topic in General Philosophy
I don't see how nothingness is a human concept. We don't in any way ever interact with nothingness. In fact I would go so far as to say no human ever has. But it's something people have thought about since ancient times. -
All of the geometric examples you gave are abstract concepts. We experience, live in, and move through 3 dimensional space. This is what I am not understanding. "the geometry of space-time is about the relationships between events in space-time" this is like a word describing itself. I am not really looking for an underlying reality just a simple fact. We look at everything and we ask what is it. Space is not nothing, cause when any of us get told to imagine nothing we don't imagine space. We can also imagine being trapped in a small closet vs being outside. How can you have more of "not a thing" or less of "not a thing"? Do the fish think water is nothing or just empty space?

I am having a lot more difficulty figuring out how to phrase this question than I thought I would. I am trying to look at the ideas that we deal with, that are conceptually understood, and people know what they mean, but they can't really be analyzed properly. There are tons of human ideas, like love and stuff. Which is why I said specifically non human concepts. -
But how does "not a thing" have a curvature for us to experience? Geometry of measurements is abstract, if thats all that were warping we would not experience anything, unless math is a real part of the world. You are DESCRIBING what way space is being warped. Space is being warped.
