  1. It seems that your goal is peace? I don't think stoicism is the solution. What drives human violence is our ongoing struggle for more resources. It is why England went into India, why Spain came to the Americas, why today countries around the world are so interested in the middle east, and so on. Resources is even the reason why a criminal steals. A society like fictionalized in Equilibrium wouldn't address resources. People would still have to compete on a personal, city, state, and national level to ensure access to resources. So war would still exist. Crime would still exist. Our global economic structure is based on growth. As a result we have an unquenchable thirst for resources. Every country and every individual person always needs more. If we, humanity, could acknowledge that we are over populated things could change. If people chose to just have a single child our population would shrink every generation. As it did our global need for resources would decrease. As it decreased things like recycling what we already built and accumulated would become preferred options over creating more. Eventually when populations got low enough there would be an abundance of resources for everyone. As result the need for war and crime would greatly reduce.
  2. That is the more interesting way to see it but I can't get there. Ultimately I, all humans, need our memories and stored knowledge to be who we are. I make countless unconscious decisions a day based on previous experiences and learned information. Damage my brain and I can no longer do that. I associate who I am, being self aware, with consciousness. Do you think it could be different? Do you think consciousness can exist seperate from any knowledge of self?
  3. Barfbag, that view of god is nice. If I believed in a god that is the god I would want to believe in. Having said that I don't believe that view of god is a plausible one. It associates ideas and feelings to a conscious universe that are human ones. Intelligent as we humans are our persceptive is shaped and restricted to our own little fish bowl. Our bodies, our needs, our mortality, our reproduction, etc make up the human experience and frame our thoughts and feelings about all things. Our motivations and ideas are human ones. A conscious universe would not think or feel (feel being a very subjective idea in this conversation) the way a human thinks or feels. So in my opinion boredom, loneliness, exploration, imagination, and so on would not be applicable to a conscious universe in the tangible human way you described. Also a conscious universe that created all to experience life, after creating life, doesn't answer any of the tough questions. Was there anything before the conscious universe? If not where did it and its conscious come from? Will it ever die? Is it the only one? Why is or isn't it the only one? Where did it get the energy to create matter?......ad nauseam.

    Dreams

Nightmares don't tend to be too traumatic for me. Frightening things happen in my dreams but I normally become aware that I am dreaming and wake myself up. I have found that even though I can't call out to my wife or move do to sleep paralysis I am still able to control my breathing. So when I want out of a dream I just start breathing heavily and it wakes me up. The few times I have not been able to wake myself during nightmares and they played out it wasn't too bad. Most nightmares I have had end rather anticlimactically. The monster, ghost, unseen force, shark, etc gets to me but ultimately can't kill me and the attack just ends.
  5. Murder in the U.S. is actually at a century low. http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2013/05/us-murder-rate-track-be-lowest-century Gun ownership is actually down. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/us/rate-of-gun-ownership-is-down-survey-shows.html?_r=0 With murder down and gun ownership down what we are seeing in the U.S. are certain paranoid groups hoarding guns. Sales for guns are up because pro gun enthusiasts are buying gun after gun out of fear they soon won't be able too. Sadly many politicians, pundits, and business looking to cash in stoke fear as a means to an end. Suicides make up over 60% of all gun deaths in the U.S. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/05/24/suicides-account-for-most-gun-deaths/ Yet to hear people talk you'd think heavily armed gangs were going door to door attacking people in every nieghborhood in this country. The open carry stand your ground stuff, in my opinion, is about self fullfilling prophecies. They are not a necessary response to any legitimate problem facing the U.S. .

Too bad you don't recall any of that translation. That would be fun. Did you read the translation? I can't read more than a word or two (basic signs) in my dreams. Having difficulty reading things is actually a trigger that often alerts me to the fact that I am dreaming.
  7. I can't see how conciousness could existed without the brain. It is a very interesting relationship though. Split brain hemisphere studies indicate our brains may be capable of more than a single consciousness. http://www.legiontheory.com/split-brain.html

    Dreams

I remember a dream a night. When I'm lucky 2-3 dreams in a night. I find them fascinating. I do not believe dreams are anything other than manifestations of the subconscious but they are fun all the same. I would be interested in reading dreams other posters have had, theories about what dreams are mean, or why we have them. The Dream I had last night: When the dream began I was in an enclosed office on the 3rd down from street level beneath a hotel. The office door opened to a hallway but was closed. in the dream I understood that there were people in the hallway looking for me. I laid on the floor and peered under the door. I was able to see a pair of female dress shoes moving infront of the door. I quickly stood, opened the door, and pulled a women in to the room, (She was no one I know in real life. Just some creation of mind). I put my finger up to my mouth indicating to her we needed to be quiet. We exited the room together and I led her down the hall to a stairwell. We ran up he stairwell until it opened up to the street. At this point the women left running across a large park across from the Hotel. I stayed behind with the intention of leading our unseen pursuers up into the hotel. So I continued up the stairs passing a maid with a large cleaning cart of the second floor. Another floor up it accorded to me that I will need to double back at some point to escape. I looked back down the stairwell looking for my pursuer but could only see that maid I had past. As I watch the maid she pulled a container of flammable liquid off her cart and began dumping it all over the stairwell. Then she lit the stairwell on fire. So I exited the stairwell on to the nearest floor which happened to be a mezzanine full of elevator equipment.........end of dream.
  9. When saying that "you" live on what exactly are is be referenced? If the body, including the brain, dies what is living on? Are you implying a form of consciousness that exists beyond the brain? A soul?
  10. There very well could be but that does not mean our Universe is without beginning or end.
  11. Laws are written by humans. They do not fall from the sky on stone tablets. Regardless of an individual's interpretation of the 2nd amendment we humans have the power to change law. The constitution initially made slaves 3/5 a person and only allowed land owners to vote. It is not a perfect set of rules meant to govern for all time. We need to stop treating the constitution like the bible and feel free to admend it as neccessary. Everyone in this country on both sides of the debate agree "bad people", people intent on using guns for crime, shouldn't have guns. I think there is a lot of confusion about where "bad people" get guns. The argument often goes that if we don't allow "good people" to have guns legally than only "bad people" will have guns because they don't buy guns legally anyway. So where do bad people get there guns? "WASHINGTON – About 1.4 million firearms were stolen during household burglaries and other property crimes over the six-year period from 2005 through 2010, according to a report released today by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). This number represents an estimated average of 232,400 firearms stolen each year— about 172,000 stolen during burglaries and 60,300 stolen during other property crimes." http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/press/fshbopc0510pr.cfm There is not some secret underground black market where "bad people" have guns shipped in from Russia. Our streets are flooded with guns because of all the scared "good people" buying guns. I am not advocated that guns be banned but I think there should be laws in place about how they are stored. Gun locks, gun safes, LoJack devices, etc should all be part of the conversation.
  12. Big Bang theory is about the moment of expansion and after. It doesn't define a cause. Could our universe, in the beginning, had been pulled by an external force? I think that is an unlikely idea. A force interacts with our universe would be part of our universe and not external to it. I think we'd see evidence that such powerful force existed just as radiation and gravity are forces we see throughout the universe even when they are gone.
  13. Good point Phi for All. Self defense is already the law of the land. No court is sending someone to prison for defending themselves or others from great bodily harm. It seems like stand your ground laws exist to minimize any responsibility an armed person may have to de-escalate a situation. As a result we are seeing ambiguous cases play out where unarmed people are being shot and killed by armed people who claim they felt threatened. Feeling threatened and actually being in great bodily harm are often two very different things. Every individual has their own threshold for what makes them feel threatened. In my opinion armed individuals should have an obligation not to confront, harass, or otherwise interfere with people unless that person(s) is directly engaged in an assualt. We have trained police officers for a reason.
  14. We use to not understand what caused any number of things: Lightning, Aurora Borealis, earthquakes, moon cycles, tides, etc, etc. Not knowing somethings origins does not mean you discard it out right. We know there was expansion(a big bang). We can use that to messure the age and size of the universe. We do not know what caused expansion but that is a different conversation than challanging if there was expansion.
  15. There are any number of claims made by people that can not be disproven. No one in here can unequivocally say there is no Lochness Monster. That is not a reason to imply the Lochness Monster may in fact exist. Different cultures have invented any number of Gods. Most people only take the ones they grew up with seriously. If I say Apollo is not real very few if anyone would debate that. If I say Jesus or Allah isn't real that would be met by strong debate. Apollo can not be disproven anymore than Jesus or Allah can. There isn't real evidence any of them so what is the difference? Isn't superstition just a way for the brain to make quick, safe, or constant choices when it is confused? You are alone in the dark and here a noise. Your brain imagines something terrible so you act by leaving or turning on a light. To me that seems like a basic evolutionary function. Without superstition throughout evolution man would've been paralyzed by perpetual confusion about their surrounding world.
  16. you posted that our universe may have no beginning or end. I believe our universe has both a beginning and an end. What I am unsure of is whether there was anything before our universe or if there will be anything after.
  17. I do believe in the big bang. It, the theory, only covers expansion and what happened after. It doesnt cover the moments before expansion of where the material came from.
  18. Background Radiation is not how the age of the universe is messured. http://www.space.com/24054-how-old-is-the-universe.html We know the universe as we know it did start between 13.7-13.9 billion years ago. When that was from the end of some other universe or an explosion in parallel dimension, or whatever is not known. Your question/thought seems to both challange the whether the big bang accorded at all and explore what came before it. For me is a lot easier to at each issue individually. Was there a big bang? Once the answer to that question is comfortably understood the next question of what cam before can be addressed.
  19. What is the Harm? For starters In my opinion God is a divisive figure. Culturally all Gods are different. As a result we have varying levels of regional hatred and international bias. Another harmful thing about God is that the overwhelming majority of gods come with a religious structure. Religions often encourage social structures in society that are detrimental. Lastly it trains people to accept all encompassing concepts that impact every area of human life without any evidence or logical thought. It teaches people that a fussy feeling is something in and of itself.
  20. God will never answer any of the questions you raised. God doesn't answer questions. God can be believed in but not interacted with. In my opinion the sooner humans acknowledge that we are on our own and that there isn't a heaven, a god to replenish the earth, and this life is all we have the better. Once we acknowledge those things we as a society can set about answering questions about the way we want to live.
  21. I assume this post is sarcasm? In that case it is brilliant and clearly I should stop posting while I am behind. No use in putting a fuse on something small of a single 9v battery. You are right. At the off chance it is not sarcasm .........this form of protection is for AC motors operating at much high power factors than a 9v DC motor. As perviously stated, perhaps that is your point.
  22. It is good to have faith in God? I suppose God can be a unifying meme. Provide people with a sense of belonging and closeness to others. If I were a coach, politician, CEO, or anyone that needed to motive a mass of people I would probably embrace God as a call to action. On the other hand belief in God has cause a tremendous amount of chaos throughout history. Just as other relics of our past that divided us like racism, s3xism, empires, monopolies and so on have been phased out and universally acknowledged of bad so should God. How many have died in the name of one God and or the other? How many suffer today in God's name? I don't believe in modern society any human should put an intangible belief, based primarily on cultural bias, above their own lives.
  23. Fuses come in various time delays which covers starting current. I agree that a 9v system (assuming it is just a single battery) doesn't need current protection. It just seems like the question as asked is about how to protect the circuit. Circuit protection for a motor is current protection.
  24. As I admitted I messed up the math in my initial post. However a fuse is the way to protect the motor and the way to make sure you are using the right size fuse is to check the current rating of the motor. Wattage (work) is equal to the product of Voltage and amperage. In this case Voltage is constant so amperage will increase when the motor works harder. So a fuse will protect it. http://www.atlantechsolar.com/calculate_volts_amps_watts_conversion.html
  25. Ohm's law states that voltage is equal to current times resistance. http://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/circuits/Lesson-3/Ohm-s-Law I made the mistake in my origanal post of multiplying rather than dividing. My finally advice was correct however. Motors have amperage ratings. It he or she is looking to protect the circuit a fuse will do it. Fuses blow on amperage not voltage. They are for over current protection which is what it seems like is needed in this case.
