  1. 1 down, 1 more to go! "Cardiovascular system, respiration, kidney and urinary tract", here I come!

  2. 1 last exam ^^ damn tough one though

My anatomy viva was possibly the hardest hour of my life. I hope all the exams went well

Hi, imo, anatomy is one of the most fun parts of medicine (so far, we've handled skeletal muscles and their innervating nerves (although a full block of nerve system is given next year), osteology, artrology, ateriology and venology and the relations of all those structures to one another). The satisfaction of knowing what runs where and all the topographical anatomy is what makes it so fun ^^ Most difficult part, to me, stays stuff like molecular biology.

  3. A neurosurgeon asking me what the basis is for the difference in clinical presentation of decortication vs. decerebration because he'd forgotten got me thinking (a second year undergraduate student in medicine knows the answer in Belgium). Perhaps neurosurgery is not my destiny, but rather neurology. Couldn't imagine forgetting all the fun nerdy neurophysiological stuff.

Neurology sounds fascinating. I am teaching basic nerve function to Yr 13 students and have to look up Physiology textbooks to fill in gaps left by the textbook. However, back to you. Which career would allow you to go home feeling better about yourself?

I'm looking towards neurology, since I'm studying medicine. It will still leave me enough clinical work and yet also lots of space in research, which is, especially in neurosciences, extremely fascinating

I have worked in research with medics who were getting paid medical level salaries - they loved it!

  4. Ah ... A one-week holiday ... Just in time ... I needed this. Just about right for a one-week observational internship at the neurosurgery department of the University Hospital ^^

My dream is to become a neurosurgeon myself. So you may understand I experience it as a great privilege that I am allowed to take an observational internship :)

Oh! I thought you were just going to walk around and inconspicuously observe. Congratulations on getting a pass!

Lol well I actually AM going to inconspicuously observe. I'm but a second year undergraduate medicine student lol ... Specialization candidature is only after 6 years, so hopefully I'll pass in 4 years ;) this observation is to get to know the specialty more

  5. All exams of my first year in medicine finally over :')

  6. Alors, if I'm not religious and do not believe in any nonsense the Catholic Church stands for, then why do I love the gospel texts, Gregorian songs and just those texts everyone knows?

  7. Anyone in favor of an (estimated) conception day instead of birthday?

    1. imatfaal

      imatfaal

No. Too many societies and cultures still stigmatize conception before marriage. It might be a way to try to minimize this prejudice but too many children and vulnerable adults would be hurt by the taunts to be worth the risk

  8. Delivered from exam isolation! Now to recover and gain some lost sleep hours.

  9. Does shouting "calm down!" to anyone stressing out interfer with their coping abilities and, in extension, their mental health status and stability?

Thanks :) I already kind of f*cked up on my first exam. I basically hope I failed so I can retake in August, because if I passed, it's not going to be something to be too proud of. Really stupid mistakes

  13. For any psychologists, psychiatrists or anyone with interests in psychology, what about this statement? "Anyone who is convinced that he/she has a depression, does have a depression."

what had you expected(??) , really I also think the reason based on your question. think/assume please what would you gain even if someone has been convinced that he/she had had a depression (?) what would we gain , what would be motre useful. also it is not good way , I also ask you the reason. I thought that it was illogical. but of course there may existence absence of information. I am not medical doctor.

    3. blue89

      blue89

I only ask the reason that caused you to think so.but probably this question would be highly important in psychology or philosophy( rather than psychiatry). if you meant whether it was harmful or good making her/him convinced he/she had a depression although he/she did not, then OK ,of course this is very bad,it is harmful. and realy good question. I also heard that this would/should be true as theoritical.(but not from academic literatures ,I herad it from professors whose expertise is psych...

  15. Ghent University ranked 71st on the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities! We beat KU Leuven!

  16. Gotta love Science Forums :) ...and Fermat ;)

  17. Hard work's paying off! A professor of my university contacted me with the question if I'm interested in participation of statistical research ... He must've had a sneak peak into my paper of this year ...

Both; I'd love to work as a neurologist but also be involved in fundamental neuroscientifical research (epilepsy, conscience, ...)

  19. Hmm ... Might reconsider my lifestyle when it comes to (lack of) sleep and (not) having breakfast ... Had another vasovagal attack (standing) on the train this morning ... I've only had it twice so far: on my first flight ever, in September, and last year on a party. So I know it isn't something too bad, but still, very freightening at that very moment.

Ohhhhhh, that's what it is! Always wondered what that was when it happens. Happens to me about once or twice a week. Just avoid the stairs and stop moving. Grab onto something, and stand straight. It'll go away sooner or later.

    3. Function

      Function

2 times a week? Sure it isn't just orthostatic hypotension? If it's a genuine vasovagal attack and you suffer from it that much, you may very well want to consult your physician ...

I don't know, it might be. Pretty much the same symptoms, but its never done any harm so I think I'm fine.

  23. I just discovered the ending of the Symphony no. 4 from Maslanka. It truly was, a peculiar experience.

  24. I love my brain for having given me that wonderful dream last night and the persistent feelings when waking up. At the same time, I've seldomly been as angry at someone as I am at my brain. How dare it wake me up from that dream.

I sensed some sort of irrelevance in blue's reactions, so I didn't really know what to answer. So blue: sit down and learn English ^^
