  1. Hard work's paying off! A professor of my university contacted me with the question if I'm interested in participation of statistical research ... He must've had a sneak peak into my paper of this year ...

      All the best.

  2. Anyone in favor of an (estimated) conception day instead of birthday?

    1. imatfaal

      imatfaal

No. Too many societies and cultures still stigmatize conception before marriage. It might be a way to try to minimize this prejudice but too many children and vulnerable adults would be hurt by the taunts to be worth the risk

  3. I just discovered the ending of the Symphony no. 4 from Maslanka. It truly was, a peculiar experience.

  4. We learned how to take an ECG today. In class, the cardiologist interpreted my ECG as coming from a young, healthy, skinny, sporting man. I found it funny too.

There's also this: "White coat hypertension, more commonly known as white coat syndrome, is a phenomenon in which patients exhibit a blood pressure level above the normal range, in a clinical setting, though they don't exhibit it in other settings." - Wiki

  9. I'm no professor in ethics, but I certainly think that when you tell a student of yours that "ah well, I know you, so don't you worry", concerning selection for teaching assistance, whereafter you let your assistent know the student he hasn't been selected, you've made a huge ethical mess.

Why yes indeed, that's most certainly why I cannot complain about anything: pro forma, nothing's happened. But you see, our professors are usually not so distant and are quite familiar with their students, some profs very; can't be asking too much when asking for a bit of ethical dignity

I appreciate the sentiment. In the 70's I blindly bought several Gensis albums which promptly did my head in because they left me confused musically but after a dozen or so listens I finally "got" it.

what had you expected(??) , really I also think the reason based on your question. think/assume please what would you gain even if someone has been convinced that he/she had had a depression (?) what would we gain , what would be motre useful. also it is not good way , I also ask you the reason. I thought that it was illogical. but of course there may existence absence of information. I am not medical doctor.

    3. blue89

      blue89

I only ask the reason that caused you to think so.but probably this question would be highly important in psychology or philosophy( rather than psychiatry). if you meant whether it was harmful or good making her/him convinced he/she had a depression although he/she did not, then OK ,of course this is very bad,it is harmful. and realy good question. I also heard that this would/should be true as theoritical.(but not from academic literatures ,I herad it from professors whose expertise is psych...

  16. So basically, the human brain is capable of performing unseen tasks, but our body falls short when the area postrema still makes you vomit while fasting after an acute toxin (read: alcohol) intake? There should be nerves from stomach to area postrema in order to inhibit vomiting while fasting after toxin intake, but hey, who're we to change who we are

Although not very Australian! I always found this amusing actually. Australians pride themselves on their excessive drinking habits but if you look up alcohol consumed per person internationally there is little correlation. We must not be able to hold our liquor, despite our stereotype of being drunks! :P

Tell you what, how about I contact a neurologist from the university hospital to set up a project for you to participate in research? Sitting on your train at 6.50 a.m., revising your course of functional neuroanatomy of the basal ganglia, and while thinking about vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in case of refractory epilepsy (it so happens I read an article on that), formulating a hypothesis on whether stimulation of certain nuclei of the thalamus would be a good treatment (integration of the class on basal ganglia), only to find out the very same day, during the first class of that day (a class on epilepsy), that this treat...

I'm saying that you're very smart and very interested/motivated. Once you graduate you may find medical academia frustrating and limiting. To compensate I hope you find the clinical work rewarding. You're a lot smarter and motivated than the average medic I've worked with.

Then I'm very flattered and I apologize for the misunderstanding. I'm dreaming specializing (6 years) in neurosurgery after my 6 years (1 done so far lol) of Medicine, a whole world of potential research and discoveries, of course combined with clinical activities. I couldn't imagine doing something else later ;)

  25. Getting ready for the new academic year, looking forward to it :)
