  2. Your male friend has decided ? What does the baby's mother think? If and when a coronavirus vaccine is developed would he wish to refuse that ? What about polio ? I don't know what country you are in but part of the problem in the UK was the insistence of the authorities to only offer a coctail vaccine. Many were afraid of the coctail effect, egged on by the then Doctor that String Junky refers to, and refused the MMR vaccine. Sadly there has been a large spike in measles cases in the UK in youths who did not receive the measles vaccine. Measles can be extremely serious in youths of their age (late teens to early twenties) whilst quite mild in smaller children. The cause of Autism is unknown, but recently changed methods of classification and the offer of special funding may well have led to an increase in diagnosis in the UK.

  3. The autism connection has been peer reviewed and the author of that has been discredited and struck off. He, to cut a long story short, had a financial interest in pursuing this position. Unfortunately, this myth has persisted and been magnified by the internet. Google 'andrew wakefield autism'

  4. I just came across a paper modeling infection numbers in Wuhan under a number of assumption regarding the effectiveness of control measures. They predict that assuming effective intervention, the peak could be reached by late February (with up to 84k cases). Or conversely, if a peak is not observed at that point it could indicate insufficient control to reduce the effective reproductive number. (Wang et al. Cell Discovery 6:10 2020)

  5. As a side note, from an co-evolutionary standpoint, diseases that have stuck around for a longer time in a population tend to become less virulent over time, due to an ongoing interplay between host and pathogen.

  6. Ok that is clearly wrong. You may be confused by some studies who studied the characteristics of those hospitalized in the first place. Current data suggest that ca. 20% of patients have severe symptoms and are likely in need to be hospitalized. There are potentially more if they have added risk (e.g. other pulmonary issues). While the number are higher than for influenza it is way below 100%. Edit: perhaps I should add that the Chinese government implemented a strict quarantine system, where all infected people (I believe) are isolated either in hospitals and/or quarantine systems. In other words, even mild cases would be isolated, whereas the numbers for influenza are only looking at severe cases that need to be hospitalized. From there, we also see that the rate is similar when it comes to death rates- COVID-2019 is associated with a ~10-20 fold increase of severe cases and death. As shown by the data, the current outcome is still way below the annual effects of influenza, even if only looking at US numbers. It does not mean that it cannot reach or even surpass those numbers eventually, but we are certainly not there yet. As an interesting side note, the CDC numbers also clearly show how undervaccinated folks are when it comes to influenza. Up to half of the population are estimated to contract it with an estimated vaccination coverage of 40-odd percent. It should also be noted that there is often an inverse correlation between severity of a disease and its spread. The coronavirus is far more effective in spreading compared to MERS, for example, because its symptoms as a whole are mild for most folks. I.e. similar to flu there is a significant time period where folks can spread the disease without being aware of it.

  7. Annual flu has fatality rate 0.1%-0.15%. Corronavirus at least twenty times higher. In China today 4% and Italy 3% (today 7 from 224 infected). Availability of medical staff is important factor affecting fatality rate. Without enough personel infected people will be dying not because they are simply ill, but because there is nobody to take care of them during illness.. "While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates thatinfluenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deathsannually since 2010." https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html Annual flu has 45 mln infected and 800k hospitalised 1.8% rate. In the USA. Coronavirus has 100% hospitalised rate. There is physical limit how many people can be simultaneously hospitalised. 3rd world countries are not prepared for such pendemia..

  8. I'm not a doctor like you, but it seems easy to understand why we need drastic action while containment is still a possibility. Are you telling us the truth?

  9. A) we do not know the actual fatality rate yet. The ~2% are based on current estimates, but it is higher than influenza (0.2-0.3%) but lower than either earlier SARS or MERS; B) Influenza is worse as it affects more people each season (at least so far), the result are overall more deaths; C) Deaths alone are not necessarily a great indicator, one should also consider other health burdens' D) Quarantines are enacted to curb spread. If a similar number of folks are allowed to be infected as seasonal influenza, the results are potentially devastating. Think about that way, seasonal influenza deaths are estimated to be around 250-645k worldwide each year. If the same amount of folks are infected (and ignoring demographic differences in outcome) we may end with upward to 20 times the number of fatalities. No need for conspiracy theories to see the need for intervention. Edit: sorry forgot to address the point about hysteria: I guess social media and the internet.

  10. The flu can be worse, but not for all strains, and we develop vaccines for the strains expected to be problematic each year. Less is known about the coronavirus, and we don't (yet) have a vaccine for COVID-19.

  13. That is true for all sterilizing procedures. While I doubt that there is a real sterilization going on other than wiping with disinfectants, it does not strike me as wrong as such.

  14. In the US, the extremist capitalists use all kinds of emotional ambushes to avoid paying taxes while making sure public funds are available only for their "investment opportunities". They'll court the racists who don't think people of color are worthy of social support, they'll court the evangelicals who don't think anyone but Christians are worthy of anything, they'll court the conservatives who think anything liberal is drug-related, and they'll court any fringe group as long as their arguments can be turned into less taxes/more exploitation for themselves. The Koch Brothers takeover of the Tea Party Movement is a classic example. What really puts a strain on an economy are those who put personal, private enrichment above all else. An economy isn't one person and their wealth. This focus on private prosperity is what causes most of our problems when you think about it. Traffic is caused by those looking to beat everyone else to the destination. Corruption involving misuse of public funding come mostly from private contractors scamming the system rather than recipients. Most of our laws revolve around treating everyone equitably and avoiding selfishness, and the biggest problems stem from those who consider themselves above that. The world is a colder place when nations put themselves above the interests of the global community. Yet the extremist capitalists are able to convince the half of the Republican party that isn't rich to support measures that only support the rich. What puts a strain on an economy is when there is so much disparity between the wealthy and poor parts of it. I think Socialism puts a strain on a billionaire's perspective on personal enrichment. If they could let that go, they might find an economy that's energized from the bottom up could be even more lucrative for them.

  15. The more parsimonious explanation for me is: Russia likes Trump and wants to help Trump. Trump wants to run against Bernie because he thinks he'll be easiest to beat/misrepresent with propaganda, so Russia is trying to help Bernie win the primary. Once/if he does, Russian support of Bernie ends, gets replaced with heavy attacks, and they continue helping Trump.

  17. "Made up nonsense"... Baby with autism is starting showing symptoms of autism at age when it is also heavily vaccinated and somebody ultimately incompetent and/or disgustingly insidious made claim that there is connection between the both. But only connection is age of a child. CDC articles about ASD https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.html The most interesting for you should be studies and statistics about ASD of identical twins, non-identical twins, and siblings. ps. Read and take data from reliable government sources.

  21. On a purely non-technical, common sense level it all boils down to this - everyone experiences the same laws of physics, regardless of their state of relative motion. Whether you turn on your laptop in your living room, or while coasting along in a rocket at nearly the speed of light wrt Earth, it is going to function in the exact same manner (I use this example, because laptops are complex machines, and make use of most of physics in some way). Any experiment you perform locally in either environment will yield the exact same results, so “being in motion” is not a local, intrinsic property of something, and has no bearing on the form of the laws of physics. When you look at this simple fact in more detail, and ask yourself what premises must hold for this to be true, you’ll eventually arrive at SR, or at least at something very close to it.

  22. Bacteria generally transfer plamids via conjugation. Uptake of free DNA is generally only possible for relatively small fragments. Considering constraints in size and transport mechanisms, I do not think that bacteria can take up whole plasmids outside of in vitro settings (e.g. electrporation, chemical transformation etc.). What you are thinking about is probably more applicable to eukaryotic cells, which actually do phagozytosis. That being said, at least in theory you could probably encapsulated plasmids in a liposome and force a fusion with a bacterial cell (depending on the cell envelope structure of the bacterium in question). These are not active uptake mechanisms, but rather an attempt to increase perneability of small molecules, such as antibiotics. These methods have been discussed since at least the late 80s but I am not sure whether folks have tried e.g. with whole plasmids. It has seen a revival together with nanomaterials as a means for drug delivery. However, it does not seem to have seen much in progress toward clinical utility, and much of the data is in vitro.

  23. A. Measurements on the astronaut clock ( A). On Planet X the light clock of the astronaut, will run twice as slowly as on Earth, due to ”time dilation”. According to your answers above, it follows that the actual speed of light on Planet X, measured by this clock, is twice as low as on Earth. That's correct But also in your opinion, the speed of sound is there twice as low as on Earth? Why? It takes twice as much time to cook a pancake here than on Earth? B. Measurements on the local clock (B). If the ticking frequency of clocks on Earth and of the local clock on Planet X are identically tuned, based on a common reference standard, which in our example is the rotation of the Earth or a distant pulsar, flashing at a frequency of 1 sec., then these clocks will measure time in the same units, i.e. on the same scale. Your answers regarding local clock B are in contradiction to the answers related to clock A, because you show here that the speed of light, measured by the local clock B on the same scale as for clocks on Earth, is twice as high on Planet X than on Earth. The same is for the speed of sound, which is twice as high here as on Earth? Also the cooking time of a pancake is shorter by half than on Earth. All of the above is not true. Taking your answers for both clocks A and B, where do you see here the gravitational time dilation, as GR claims? The “time dilation” cannot be equated with the slowdown of ticking of light clocks, because this slowdown is due to the decrease in the speed of light as the gravity increases. Only your answers for questions 1 and 2 are correct for both clocks A and B. Sorry, but the relationship between the clocks has nothing to do with the passage of time as such. If you have a clock in room A that is fast, and in room B a clock that is late, it does not mean that in room B the passage of time is slower than in room A. If any two clocks measure a divergent values of the passage of time, it only means that the clocks are not synchronized with a common reference standard. After synchronization with the reference standard, both clocks will measure the passage of time in an identical scale, regardless of the value of gravity at the location of each. Material particles are only a condensed form of electromagnetic energy. Life dilation of muons and other elementary particles during movement is just a confirmation of the above fact. So I repeat here again, during movement, only light clocks slowdown, and not all type of clocks as SR claims, and this is clearly presented in the article The interpretation of time dilation is incorrect. The links to this article and to the program VETER for verification of SR theory, has been so far stubbornly removed by the moderator. I am very sorry for the Moderator of this forum for the fact that due to my respect for all who read this thread and want to know the details, I attach here this "prohibited" link once more : THAT'S A BIG NOPE Let's not be afraid of the truth, gentlemen.
