In Topic: Sleeping when its hot
24 May 2012 - 03:44 PM
If I play computer games within a couple hours of when I go to bed I find sleeping much much more difficult, I think it's a brain activity thing, I think to much with gaming... Currently I tend to go to sleep listening to something, it doesn't really matter what, I find things like QI or just a minute work well, although last night I just ended up listening to all of just a minute and laughing at it, which isn't the best way of getting to sleep.
For the heat something that I find works is having my windows open (it's nearly always colder outside at night than inside) and my curtain positioned in such a way that the draft blows over my pillow. This cools me and my pillow. -

First thing I'd suggest trying is holding the ctrl key and pressing F5, it does a refresh without caching...
Also for reference anyone else pmb uses IE, -
In Topic: New planets forming elsewhere
23 May 2012 - 12:25 PM
CaptainPanic, on 23 May 2012 - 11:59 AM, said:Could it be that there are also planets forming away from a forming star? Could it be that interstellar gas/dust gathers to form a planet that does not have a star?
Maybe I should ask: is there such a thing as interstellar material? And is that abundant enough to create a planet?
(I've actually been lectured on this by one of the people whose name appears on the bottom of the picture! My claim to fame I guess)
But to answer your question that really depends on your definition of planet. Yes, star forming regions create entities which are too small to even to fuse deuterium, these are sometimes termed giant planets, sometimes brown dwarfs, and I seem to recall there are a couple of other terms I cannot remember. It is possible that they have a composition close to that of Jupiter but I suspect they'd have less heavy elements.
Personally I wouldn't call them planets, they form in a different way and are not in a solar system...
Outside star forming regions I do not think you could have a mass density large enough to form anything of note. -

Storage has always been the big issue with Hydrogen fuelled vehicles.
It is always worth bearing in mind that the Water -> Hydrogen + Oxygen reaction uses more energy than you regain from doing Hydrogen + Oxygen -> Water, so all you're really doing here is moving the problem of energy generation to how you generate your electricity (it's basically just a different type of battery), which they do cover kinda.
I also wonder how much energy it takes to create the material that goes into the tanks... -

Pmb, I was replying to gravity guy not you. I'd be very surprised if I had to tell you about peer review or the speculations forum.
