  1. UCAS says numbers applying for physics has gone up

    According to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service there has been a raise in the number of students applying for physics courses at university this year in the UK. This is despite an overall decrease across the board. Physics is up by 8.3% as compared to last year.

    It seems that the number of students applying for a university place in England has gone down 9.9% as compared to last year. Wales and Scotland, who have different levels of student funding have different statistics. The drop in Scotland is about 1.5%, Wales 1.9% and Northern Ireland 4%.

    Professor Steven Rawlings of Oxford University was found dead at the home of Dr Devinder Sivia. Both men had co-authored books together.

    Does anyone here know a good review article about graphene and in particular the electronic properties?

    I know that the effective low energy theory is described by a two dimensional massless Dirac theory with an "effective speed of light" about 10^{6}ms^{-1}. I am interested in the effective gauge fields due to defects, the similarity with quantum field theory on curved backgrounds and the use of supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

    I know little about condensed matter physics. (I should have paid more attention at school)

    Any suggestions of reviews welcome.

    On the 12th August historian David Starkey has told BBC's Newsnight ''the whites have become black'' and the ''destructive, nihilistic gangster culture'', he said ''has become the fashion''. You can find more details here.

    Various people have come to say how wrong Dr. Starkey is. The Labour leader Ed Miliband said the comments are "disgusting and outrageous". The BBC has received many complaints about Dr. Starkey's comments.

    So what do you all think? Is Dr. Starkey wrong in what he said? Or is he just wrong for saying it? Surely we do not want afro-american gang R'n'B drug culture to be prevalent in UK society (or anywhere else) ? This is irrespective of race.

    I quite like Nakahara's book, thought it is not the most complete book mathematically speaking. It does however introduce you to many of the basic ideas of topology and geometry.
    Isham's Modern di®erential geometry for physicists is also quite good, but again lacks some rigour. Tohru Eguchi, Peter B. Gilkey, and Andrew J. Hanson. Phys. Rept.,66 is also good.

    Can you recommend any good introductory books on differentiable geometry? Preferably one with a lot of hand-holding, and in-depth explanations of the various concepts?

    In physics differential geometry probably is advanced mathematics used "day to day". The reason for this is that physics, or for sure classical physics is usually smooth, i.e. you can take derivatives and does not depend on exactly how you decide to present it. Both these are fundamental ideas in differential geometry.

    It seems to me that most advanced math is a form of, or heavily relies upon, differentiable geometry. Is this the case, or am I mistaken?

    Odd variables appear in quantum field theory when looking for semi-classical descriptions of fermions, like the electron and also are needed in gauge theories like Yang-Mills. Supersymmetric theories uses them, including superstring theory. They also can be very useful linear algebra and differential geometry as a neat description of alternating forms.
