Tapping Into Yellowstone Supervolcano
16 May 2012 - 05:19 PM
Has anyone ever heard such an idea? Since Yellowstone Supervolcano may destroy the USA and do great harm to the entire Earth, why not coax it to "let off steam" so it cannot erupt massively? In the process we would need to make Yellowstone erupt, but control the eruption so just enough ash goes into the stratosphere and blocks enough sunlight to halt global warming. Also use the heat to generate power. This would require tunneling into Yellowstone and creating a channel for it to erupt just enough to prevent a super eruption. Is this possible? If so, it would save the Earth from destruction, stop global warming, and even might serve as an energy source. -
The Car that Drives Itself
3 May 2012 - 06:00 PM
I just saw an incredible news story on TV about a car that drives itself. It uses GPS and for "fine-tuning" has a spinning dome on top of the car with lasers scanning the surroundings. It has a nearly perfect image of all sides of the car, simultaneously, which is something humanly impossible. The car steered and accelerated on its' own, at rather high speeds, around an obstacle course, with perfect results. According to the inventor, the driverless car is not far away. It is invented by Sebastian Thrun of Google.

Elements From Supernovas
28 March 2012 - 05:44 PM
Can all the other elements found in nature be created by one massive supernova? Or does it take several supernovas to create all the heavier elements?
Is it possible that the first stars that formed after the big bang could have been so massive that they created all the elements found in nature when they exploded?
Is is possible that there are even heavier elements we are not aware of that could be created by a supernova massive enough? Maybe in some regions of the universe there are found elements heavier than uranium or plutonium. -
How do they know it?
2 February 2012 - 08:44 PM
I love science programs, but my pet peeve is when they just state facts without giving a clue HOW they know it. For example, they will always say our Sun will last for a few more Billion years before swelling into a red giant and destroying the inner planets, probably including Earth. How do they know the sun will last so long? Maybe they are way off, and the Sun will become unstable in Millions or even thousands of years from now. -
Tax Junk Food
2 February 2012 - 08:39 PM
This seems like such a no brainer, why don't we hear about it? The problem is America is grossly overweight, and sickly, due for the most part in unhealthy living habits. Why not put a big tax on junk food, and use it to subsidize fruits, veges, and other quality nutritional food? Then poor people will better afford healthier food, and can't afford junk food.
Also there should be a tax break for being very healthy, and not needing expensive health care.
