Associate Specialist Step I-IV- Neurophysiology- Molecular & Cell Biology



Associate Specialist:


The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley is seeking a highly motivated individual to carry out research in neurophysiology and optogenetics in the barrel cortex of awake, behaving mice.



Responsibilities:


This position is for a skilled specialist with extensive expertise performing large scale neurophysiological recordings from awake, behaving mice. The candidate must be trained to perform surgeries on mice for preparation for experiments, involving implantation for head-fixation, craniotomies, and electrode insertion. The candidate must be facile with Matlab-based instrument control and data analytics, specifically with spike sorting and population neural analysis. The candidate must also have experience with optogenetics in behaving animals, including the delivery of viral vectors and post-hoc brain histology to identify electrode tracks and viral expression. The candidate is responsible for independently designing, executing and analyzing all aspects of the in vivo experiments.



Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application):


Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent degree, in Molecular and Cell Biology, Biology, or related field. Applicant must have 4-5 years of experience in a laboratory setting.



Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):


Minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory setting using optogenetics to address neural circuits and sensory coding in the somatosensory cortex of transgenic mice, in the awake state, combined with high channel count electrophysiology.



Preferred Qualifications (By start date):


Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in Molecular and Cell Biology, Biology, or a related field. A minimum of two years postdoctoral experience in a laboratory setting.


Matlab proficiency, brain histology, viral injections, mouse whisker tracking experience, preparations of animals for in vivo awake behaving neurophysiology.



Appointment:


This position reports to Dr. Hillel Adesnik. The initial appointment will be for 100% time for 1 year with the expectation of extension based on performance and the availability of funding.



Salary: $52,344-$63,012 depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
