Like Acme says: he can hear therefore his inner ear is OK. Concerning critical systems, such as breathing regulation, tthe body has system redundancy i.e. backup systems in the event of failure. It is just that in very young babies it is being speculated in your link, with respect to possible causes of SIDS, that this redundancy is not yet developed.
