Is My Suitcase Safe?

I have a London Fog suitcase and traveling bag from the Chatham Collection. It was designed in the United States but made in China.

They both have a warning on them saying "Warning: This Product Contains Chemicals Known To The State of California To Cause Cancer, or Birth Defects or Other Reproductive Harm."

It does NOT say which chemicals. Nor does it say the ways in which someone would become exposed to them. From what I understand if these chemicals are in there in significant amounts this label must be on the product in California even if it's not something you would eat and the only way to be harmed by the chemicals is to eat the product.

But I don't know if that's the case for this product. It's a very nice suitcase so I don't want to return it if it is safe. However, I have searched for over an hour and can NOT find any useful information on this. I did find a list of the chemicals that require this label but it didn't say what products they were in or the ways in which a person could become exposed, so that does me no good.

I was hoping that given this is a science forum some people here may be knowledgeable about this.

EDIT: I noticed this:

It says "Manufactured on: [04/01/2014]

This product contains hardwood plywood with a composite core that is California 93120 Phase 2 compliant for formaldehyde."

So it's formaldehyde. Still how dangerous is this? Should I return it?

How anti-vaccination is California? Might be related... And let's not forget that our own body makes formaldehyde out of methanol which can easily be ingested from eating an apple.

The formaldehyde is in the adhesive used for bonding the plywood layers. I personally wouldn't hesitate to buy and use the suitcase. There are far worse things to worry about. The point in the production chain where I would perhaps express concern is for the people who make the boards and as such can be classed as an occupational exposure hazard. Enjoy your suitcase.

California is basically an over protective parent. They don't want you to breath, drink, ingest, stub your toe on something,or in any other way expose you to even the minutest risk unless you have been properly warned that it might cause anything from urination to your kidneys exploding, and your house spontaneously combuting in a blue white flame.

Could it stem from America being overly-litigious in general; they are just covering themselves, regardless how small the risk?

It's possible, though it's generally very hard to find the state culpable in product related incidents. Still, it is a sad commentary that the American Dream is no longer work hard, get ahead, but get hurt, sue everyone in sight.

Yes, one of the more regrettable imports to the UK from the US are the ambulance chasers and accident solicitors. Easy money I suppose.

No prob. I'm sure we've given you a few things you'd rather not see.or have :)

Black pudding is a type of blood sausage commonly eaten in Britain, Ireland and Sweden. It is generally made from pork blood and a relatively high proportion of oatmeal. In the past it was occasionally flavoured with pennyroyal, differing from continental European versions in its relatively limited range of ingredients and reliance on oatmeal and barley instead of onions to absorb the blood.[1] It can be eaten cold, as it is cooked in production, but is often grilled, fried, baked or boiled in its skin.

Don't knock it till you have tried it! A few slices of black pudding, a fried egg, and toast is a perfect breakfast - admittedly it shortens your life expectancy - but with a strong cup of coffee it is enough to set you up for the day.

Drat! now you are making me hungry.

Anyway, my best guess is that

"California 93120 Phase 2 compliant for formaldehyde." means that it complies with the rules for formaldehyde .

That would mean that there's little or no formaldehyde present.

It's amusing that California is noted for its beaches- made from sand.

Sand is, or contains, a substance known to the state of Cal....

Silica is a known carcinogen. So is sunshine, so is alcohol.
