I think they're victims of Putin.

and why victims?

they were jailed for insulting the feelings of believers

They burst into the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and insulted millions of believers, and was arrested for it,and it correctly

why not think about the rights of millions of people who have been violated by the act pussy riot

they are victims of their stupidity but not Putin...

not exactly,I think that many may not be aware of some facts

the opinion is based on facts

if over the issue, one has no facts, there is no opinion on this issue

on this for the correct understanding,we need all the facts

Moderator Note

There is obviously a very large language barrier here and your second line is certainly confusing, but regardless, the use of the word, 'whores,' is unacceptable here.

There also seems to be a lot of claims made in this thread with very little support. Please cite where you get your information (that goes for everyone).

Do not respond to this modnote in-thread.

How were they harmed, exactly?

well, imagine for example that on your wedding will come hooligans and spoil your wedding

As you and your friends would react to this?

but here they have spoiled much more valuable than a wedding for millions of people

Did they disrupt a wedding, or have they disrupted special church services? What have they actually done?

Just read a little about it, I would agree that maybe some fine would be warrented, assuming that's what they do to people who disrupt services like that.

As far as people who were not in the service being insulted - that's not a legal issue, not even a moral issue.

Church services were not,but in the temple priests and parishioners

and moreover, this is one of the main temples in the country, the fact that there was hooliganism offends feelings of believers

if they wanted to Express protest against Putin's policies, why mix politics and religion?
Go to protest on Red Square

I have some sympathy here, protesting inside a church was not the smartest thing they could have done. It maybe in bad taste and may have even upset people who otherwise may have sided with Pussy Riot on many issues.

The trouble is that the government response seems a bit heavy handed.

On this charge provides up to 7 years of imprisonment

But that cannot cover upsetting people who were not there, can it?

I don't know Russian law, but simply upsetting people (as long as it is not Putin ;-)) is not against the law right?

You're probably not going to find a lot of sympathy here. This website is populated primarily by westerners (mostly USA, UK, and Canada). With people who live in these countries, you're not going to get any sympathy. The response is heavy-handed even assuming you get sympathy for there being a response at all.

See, in the USA, this situation seems even more dramatically absurd. In our federal (and in many state) Constitution(s), we are guaranteed the freedom of speech. Unless you actually hurt someone with your speech, you cannot be jailed for offending someone. If they were trespassing, they could be removed from the premises. If they actually did property damage, they could be fined. If they actually harmed someone, they could be in serious trouble in both the criminal and civil courts.

However, Churches are typically open to anyone who wants to be there. As far as I know, they didn't actually damage anything or anyone.

Jailtime for being 'offensive', if it had happened in the US, would result in riots in the streets.

well tough question...depends how you upsetting,if you'll be naked running about the streets of the city, you're upsetting people, but it will be a hooliganism, and you shall receive the penalty

I don't know,I'm not a lawyer

but because of the severe violations of public order, even if you do not show violence, you can get jail term

Interestingly it is not so clear what would have happened in Britain. There is no freedom of speech law and so whoever would deal with it would have to balance this all up with various laws including human rights laws, religious hate laws and so on. It can be a mess.

We have had confusing situations where it is not immediately clear what law trumps what law.

In Britain it is not explicitly against the law to be naked in public. There has to be a level on intent to course harm. Paraphrasing we have something like "reasonable course to believe that your actions would course harm and distress". Does not cover simply upsetting people as such as people upset me all the time.

I know that they don't have anything as hard and fast wrt speech in the UK, but I doubt any of the laws that they would have broken would have resulted in the punishment they actually got. As far as I can tell, they'd probably get a trespassing fine and maybe a fine for disturbing the peace (or whatever the UK equivalent is).
