for a science fair project I was wondering if there is a better (more violent) solution for a kids volcano. It still has to be safe of course but we want it to shoot up instead of just foam over top.

Mentos and diet soda. If you choose a clear soda, you could dye it red/orange. Needs to be in the bottle, or with a restricted neck for maximum pressure.

I like the way this guy set it up so the bottles are removable. Saves time filling a cemented-in bottle with soda.

Messy but safe.

Potassium permanganate and glycerine is relativey safe as long as it is done in open air or a fumehood.
