Designer Genes

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys :)

I have recently come across the term "Designer Genomes "

Please tell me what they are and what all possibilities can exist to design from them ??

Is there a threat or evidence of some traits that cud be introduced in this process, once we get info from Human genome project?

please tell me asap!!

The term "Designer Genes" are usually reffered to the genes within the genome that actually codes for something(very tiny amount as compared to the rest of the genomic material of which 90-95% is nothing but Junk DNA).

AAV (virus) is used most commonly in a gene therapy and that may be considered a designer Genome. Because the original version of AAV IS a virus(as you know, Viruses are exceptionally good at sneaking genetic material into the cell's nucleus), in order to use it to 'sneak' a gene or two into the human genome(so that it does not have any detrimental effects. Some genes on it Must be turned off, and then they insert a gene into the genome of this virus that needs to insert in the genome of the organism. That is why it can be considered Designer Genome.

The stuff that they do in Crystallography(modifying DNA) can and is considered Designer DNA, as well as the pharmaceutical companies when they create new (or modified or novel) proteins, enzymes, etc.

Hence the word Designer Drugs, Designer DNA, etc.

.........what all possibilities can exist to design from them ??

If you can figure that out, make sure you patent it/them, as that will most likely make you a very rich man/woman.

We have the info on the Genome.

We now need to figure it out how it all works(which genes actually code for stuff, etc) and learn how to control it all.
