A myth is a story about hero which is usually spread verbally. Heroes are the mains protagonists of myths. They can be defined as people real or imaginary admired for there achievements. We will see more precisely what is a hero through the case of Gandhi and we will study why Gandhi was such a hero in death. It’s evident that almost everybody think that Gandhi is a hero but very often without knowing why. We will try to understand why he can be considered as a hero and why not.

From the 16th to 1947, India was under the control of the British. They exploited Indians resources and they forced Indian to pay heavy taxes. Gandhi will contest theses measures and the discriminations perpetrated by the settlers but what is genius in his manner of express his discontent is that it’s always in a pacific way. He always resort to non-violent values such as for instance civil disobedience. Gandhi born in 1869, he was the leader of a movement which fight for Indian’s independence. He belonged to the merchant caste and struggled during all his life for civil right.

During his fight, many of Gandhi’s qualities have been brought to light. The most important after his non-violence is probably his cleverness. Indeed, he was one of the first to understand the strength of the mass media and how it was possible to use it in order to bring everybody to his cause. He used this media to show the world that he and the Indian population were victims of violences by the British whereas they demonstrated peacefully. The film “Gandhi” produced by Richard Attenborough, is a great illustration of this non-violence. There is a scene where we can see Gandhi who is burning Indian’s licenses beside a policeman whereas it’s absolutely forbidden. He keep burning these licenses without violence while the policeman hit him.

An other quality of Gandhi is his devotion. As a matter of fact, he struggled and at numerous time he was beaten and imprisoned four times! He spend several years in jail but he never gives up. It show that he was really devoted and ready to sacrifice himself for his cause. Moreover, he was also very tolerant he accepted everybody who was interested in joining his movement. Whatever was the culture, origins or religion of these people. For instance he accepted and even helped Muslims several times even if there were tensions between his religion (Hinduism) and Muslims. He went so far as considering them to be equals. Finally he was a creative man. The best proof is that he coined his own word to describe his fight. This word is “Satyagraha” and means “truth force”. He coined this word because he thought that the term “passive resistance” was too synonym of weakness.

All these qualities led Gandhi to victory because in 1947, India finally regain its independence. From this example we can improve our definition of a hero which have therefore numerous qualities namely bravery, devotion, smartness and tolerance.

Even if he is considered as a hero by the majority of the world, Gandhi also have detractors and during his life he commits errors.

During a night he was in charge of keep watch over his father who was sick and in danger of death. He then felt an irrepressible wish of making love to his wife. He finally decided to leave his father alone who eventually died. After this episode, Gandhi felt really guilty about the die of his father and then decided to abstain from sex for the rest of his life. He admit himself that he had been unable to resist this animal impulse. In addition, he was also very jealous and possessive with his wife at the point of being distracted in his work. Many people accuse Gandhi to be responsible of the bloodbath that followed the repartition of India in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In the same way, many Muslims blame him because they thought he was not enough protective toward them. In top of that he was also criticised for being quick-to-anger and bad-tempered. Even if his non-violence principle is an undeniable quality, he made some declarations a little bit to far-fetched about this principle. He said that the Jewish should “offered themselves to the butcher’s knife” and thus provoke the empathy of the world rather than keep fighting with violence. In my opinion this approach takes his doctrine too far in view of the horror the Jewish have endured.

Gandhi himself acknowledge his flaw and said that he did many errors in his life. It allow us to sharpen our definition of a hero, the latter have to have hindsight about himself. In top of that, being flawed does not necessarily prevent being a hero, on the contrary it characterize the human being!

To conclude, being a hero is not easy, it’s a life choice. Heroes usually defend and fight for a cause. It’s not just a random cause they chose on the spur of the moment, it’s a root cause for the one they are ready to give their lives. Through the example of Gandhi, we saw that a hero have many qualities but he also have flaws because these weaknesses characterize the human being.
