A straight forward Chess Puzzle !

Commander

Recommended Posts

There is a solution. I just didn't want to reveal it. It's just not as straightforward as the title suggests.

But I might, seeing how it is unlikely to get solved.

What I meant was this is a true STANDARD Mate in two puzzle unlike the other one where the Solution required the ILLEGAL PROMOTION of a Pawn into the Opposite Color Knight which is not a Chess Puzzle at all !

It is HARD though !

Fair enough.

Am I allowed to post the solution, as it's unlikely anyone will solve it, seeing how all 5 people who play chess have had their go? :D

Put it in a 'spoiler (There is one in the 'special BB code drop down - third icon from the left top row on the input box)

Hi,

Please give the Solution if you have personally solved it !

And of course thereafter every move by Black needs to be countered.

Either others can shoot the moves and you can give the answers or you can yourself list out all the possibilities.

TY

White moves to mate in two !

I'm quoting the diagram for easier reference.

The winning move is the clever Be4! interposing with the rook's view of the f4 square.

If either the knight or bishop take on e4, then Bf4#

If the rook takes on e4, then Rd5#

Anything else, and Bf4#

Hi,

After B e4 if Black replies :

k x B what is the counter

k d6 what is the counter

e7 e6 what is the counter

b d6 what is the counter

r d6 what is the counter

r d7 what is the counter

n g4 what is the counter

These will be needed to analyze the Completeness of the answer !

Congratulations and well done though as you got the Solution !

+1 for you

So what if the reply to B -e4! is K - d6 ?

Then just Qxe7#

1) k x B what is the counter

2) k d6 what is the counter

3) e7 e6 what is the counter

4) b d6 what is the counter

5) r d6 what is the counter

6) r d7 what is the counter

7) n g4 what is the counter

Ok I will answer all of these:

1) Re3#

2) Qxe7#

3) Qf4#

4) Qf5#

5) Qf5#

6) Qf5# (for some reason, I spent a lot of time on this one because I thought the king could go to d6, but he clearly can't)

7) Qxe7#

That's why no one solved it. Too many variations. I have to admit, I didn't consider all of them but it's still correct :D

Well done once again and that is why I immediately declared it as the Solution bcoz it was the solution and only one !

I'm looking forward to more puzzles from you.

Maybe we can post them in the chess thread (http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/102312-the-chess-thread/) so as not to annyo everyone with constant new threads. Because I'd like to post some new ones as well.

If you do that, please let's have one puzzle at a time, otherwise I'll get hopelessly confused. It's bad enough with just one.
