Worrying about posting my pictures online...is this normal???

Recommended Posts

I'm worried and afraid of taking selfies and posting them on facebook because I'm afraid someone (e.g. my enemies) might download and steal my photos and Photoshop them in adult pornographic sites or personal vendetta blogs online. Is this a legitimate fear and is it enough reasonable grounds to not have facebook, instagram or any other form of social media where the main attraction is sharing online electronic photos?

What's everyone's opinions about this?

I have had friends' facebook accounts hacked or duplicated through the creation of fake accounts.

Anyone ever had similar experiences?

If someone managed to download your photo and they know your full name, they can pretty much ruin your life through online rumours. What are everyone's thoughts about these sorts of things happening? Apparently, most people who do it tend to get away with their act so there's not much stopping these people. Once they get your photo, they can make a lousy linkedin account for you and then it's all over for you career-wise..

What a bunch of baloney. Why should you be scared of people online?? Ninety nine percent of the time they won't be in a position to hurt you anyway because they live far away. Sure they can spread rumors but then you can put them in jail for spreading those rumors and they are the ones that ruin their careers not you.

Would you refuse to walk down the street because you might get robbed??

These things happen to a lot of people. Many have had their identity stolen online or photoshopped in unsavoury pictures online in dodgy websites.

Are you sure you can place the perpetrator in jail? What about if they lived overseas?

What about if it came from your former ex-partner who hates your guts and constantly stalks you online?

While the specific fear appears unfounded, what is the benefit of uploading selfies?

Sharing with friends and receiving compliments from your friends on how you look and receiving many "likes".

Staying connected with old friends and through people acknowledging your beautiful/handsome/attractive etc.

Firstly, constant upload of selfies is not a very positive attitude. As you have said in post #3 that you upload selfies for getting likes and comments, it eventually makes you narcissistic. It ruins your life because you always think of yourself and your life, forgetting what's going on with others.

Secondly, uploading selfies makes your photos vulnerable but you can make them hide from public. So only your friends can see them and I expect that your friends are not your foes.

If in doubt, don't. FB is a pit of poison I don't mind being photoshopped into a porn star. :)

Most English speaking countries have laws which will protect you regardless of whether you are a foreigner or not. Stalking is illegal both online and offline stop putting up with it and report it. Identity theft happens and is also illegal most of these people get caught eventually and the scripts to find them get better everyday.

What if my enemies already have my pictures?

I have a cartoon as my profile picture on facebook at the moment and have all my photos on private and only my friends can see. But is it normal having to put everything to private?

I have deleted my other social media sites...

Report it to the police you mean?

What if th e perpetrator lived overseas in another country?

Can I still catch him/her?

Has anyone here considered.the possibility that someone might do this to them?

Someone can just steal your pictures and ruin your reputation everywhere.

It will ruin your life??

Better not be so public and keep everything private..

But so many people are so trusting these days....and there are so many nasty people with ill-intents....

Catch him/her?? You have no idea what the police are capable of they can record video, copy the computer contents and track the location, keep copies of all emails, text messages and calls. Cerberus can trace you anywhere in Europe.

You are clearly riddled with doubt, so I would keep your pictures exclusive to your friends.

What is Cerberus?

How does it/they operate exactly?

I'm scared somebody might steal my embarrassing pictures lol!!! :)

Knowing they live far away only encourages them to do it coz they can more easily get away with it.

An anti-theft app. You can force install to a phone's imei number. It will then send location data, videos, pictures etc. Of course only the police can do that well unless you deliberately install it. https://www.cerberusapp.com/

What do you mean?

And how do they do that exactly?

Search engines can find photos.

Stolen phones tend to be used for porn or sold for parts.

But anyone here ever had any fears?

Why do so many people release their pictures online and out to the world?

Does this put themselves in a vulnerable position should they make any enemies or have any falling out with friends?

E.g. In the future

I'm the sort of person who likes to live a quiet and private life. I prefer to have hard copy pictures to share instead of just electronic soft copy versions...

I don't want any pictures of myself shared to the world except with close relatives...is this understandable and normal???

Because nowadays I see so many young people with 5000 friends on Facebook and many.more on Instagram...Are these people going to regret giving access to so many people of their pictures???

It only takes one rotten apple to spoil everything and to ruin and one's life's forever and what you post on the internet often stays permanent. You cannot take a lot of things back...

The people putting themselves at risk really, are those who show pictures of themselves in potentially compromising positions or situations eg sharing themselves naked or some such over the internet. Normal, innocuous everyday images I don't think have any value to anyone except those you are friendly with.

I don't understand it myself. :(

Most of my friends on Facebook have around 500 friends..maybe some people like to be open to the world???

But there are advantages and disadvantages...

You look like an old guy so you have probably never heard of Photoshop but with this, you can crop someone's head from an original photo and put it in a compromising situation...a lot of young people like to mess about with Photoshop now...it's nothing new...

This is a really big problem now...it's been on the news reports for ages urging people to keep their pictures private...sometimes people even take your picture while sleeping and then crop and alter it...This is how bad the situation has become!!!

People are really scared...it's really horrible. In my home I no longer have internet except on my smartphone...

Right... underqualified adults don't help the situation.

That's stupid you'll never keep up with your homework without the internet.

There is, of course, a bit of risk in uploading the photos. But, that risk cannot drive you mad and make you unsocial in a social media, because there are no such things that are absolutely without risk. You may drive a car and there is a risk of a car accident ; you may be travelling on a plane and there is a risk of hijacking; you may be eating a tasty meal, but the food may be poisoned.

So much to say and yet so little time, what with alternately laughing and crying.

James_Pain, here are some of my thoughts:

1. As several people have pointed out to you, if you are concerned about your photographs being misused then do not post them online, anywhere.

2. If you feel you must post them, then ensure they are accessible only to those you have granted access to.

3. Take a long hard look at what motivates you to want to post these pictures in the first place. It soulnds unhealthy to me.

4. You very sweetly explained to String Junky what Photoshop was, since being an old guy he might not know what it was. That would be insulting it if it wasn't so amusing. I believe I am around the same age, or somewhat older than SJ. I was probably using Photoshop before you were born and was writing software decades before that.

5. The very fact that it is so easy to manipulate photographs means that anyone with their brain in gear knows to disregard such nonsense.

6. Stop worrying, be sensible, get on with enjoying life.

Because you and I are old - it's ok to be called that by someone not long had his pubes - and pre-internet, we have the luxury of being independent of its influences, if we wish, but it's all James knows and it permeates all his short life from birth; its rules and pressures are inextricable to him. The peer pressure must seem overwhelming because he is literally potentially exposed to billions of people's thoughts at the touch of a button. Contrast that with the peer pressure we had; at most, a few hundred schoolkids in our school. He is over anxious though and needs to get it in perspective.

I'm 54 and PS came out when I was 28. It was very expensive, so I never got to use it then. IIRC its expense could only be really justified by imaging professionals in its early days.

Probability that you will be hit by car while walking through street is higher than somebody on the net will stole your identity and then make fake profile to compromise you...

Are not you afraid of walking on the street?! How can you never have any fears?! ;)

QUOTE: - "You look like an old guy........ never heard of photoshop"..

LoL - Oh my - I know that was meant as an innocent statement but it did make me laugh wondering how StringJ would take it -- he will probably laugh..

Hey! - String Junky - have you ever even heard of photoshop you old fogey? lol.

PS - On topic - I would just chill out and not worry about it - who cares what others think about you!? Put your pics up and if someone hacks them then so what! It just shows that you are awesome enough for them to consider you a threat or an enemy and that they are sad or mentally ill enough to actually attack you. Even if they do photoshop you then you can just laugh at them for being so childish and not care - that will affect them more. Take the higher ground and stop worrying what others will think about you.

EDIT: - Doh! Only read page one before posting... perhaps I'm getting too old! lol.
