Non-equilibrium

Hi, we just got done covering "reaction kinetics" and equilibrium but when I tried talking to my physics teacher about when matter starts from a non-equilibrium state in an isolated system, it spontaneously moves towards its own state of equilibrium, he didn't feel the need to tell me. I asked him about reactions always finding equilibrium except for the universe. Because I remember my chemistry teacher telling us the universe is the only isolated system technically. When I tried to ask him why we spend time calculating equilibrium when the only true example of an isolated system isn't in equilibrium? How can the laws of the universe hold everything in equilibrium except for itself? It seemed weird to me because if the entire universe doesn't go by equilibrium, how can we say many of it's parts are always in equilibrium. When I tried talking to him about it, he got mad, just like my grandma did when I asked about Jesus having siblings? I figured my teacher would just explain why it makes sense, and didn't expect him react like my bible thumping grandma.

Can anyone explain?

Hi guys

I'm new to this forum and wanted a bit of help on a project I have started.

I'm very passionate about every field of science, but I find Astrophysics particularly fascinating.

After nearly a year of watching inspiring YouTubers, such as Vsauce, SciShow, MinutePhysics, etc, I've decided to make a YouTube channel dedicated to Astrophysics.

I personally don't have a lot of experience in making videos, however, I have had experience in presenting and educating. I have done many presentations at college, mainly about topics like Space Travel, Colonization of Mars, etc. I thoroughly enjoy sharing knowledge and want to help educate the general public.

So I'm looking for some advice and other people who have a similar interest and maybe someone who I can cooperate with.

Really Worried About My Future

Hey, I am really worried about my future. I love science so much but i find the exam really difficult but i know all the stuff in class and at home. I get into bits when i get into that exam room and to make it worse i am dyslexic and i find it extremely difficult to read the questions and interpret them. I really want to have a job in Science. I have such a passion for this subject but i cant pass the exams. I am in the UK but i really dont know what to do. I did my double award GCSE exams last mount and i am constantly thinking about how i did if i will get a B to get onto the A-level course. I do BTEC Level 2 Diploma as an extra in school and get D* but this qualification is not highly reguarded and i would not get onto a science degree with a Level 3 diploma. What do you think i should do??? Please Help, everyday i worrie about this

Teaching Science: 13 yr old vs. Graduate

I do not like this Topic Title because it is inaccurate; whereas, and my experience as a programmer has taught precision is crucial. But, after considering the purpose of a title, and wrestling with my language limitations (I am far from being a poet), I decided to use it, because a title needs to engage an audience, as science education for 13 year old brains need to engage its intended audience and must sometimes sacrifice accuracy to do so. See this video:

Nand2Tetris...A Basics Computer Science Class

Shimon Schoken, a professor, says about grading, "I'm sick of it." "Grading takes away all the fun from failing." "We collect your

B+s and A-s and aggregate them into a number like 3.4, which is stamped on your forehead and sums up who you are. Well, in my opinion we went too far with this nonsense, and grading has become degrading."

The Nand2Tetris open project teaches those who complete it the basics of computer science. One learns how to build a computer from nand gates. Using the computer one built, to develop an assembler. Using the assembler, how to make an operating system. Using the assembler and operating system, how to make a simple java-like compiler. And, using the compiler and other tools, how to code a a game like Tetris.

My computer science education began with a BS in Electrical Engineering, because the university I attended did not have an undergraduate computer science curriculum (yes, I am a old). While at the university, I learned Fortran in an engineering class, and started hanging out in the computer lab, where lived an IBM1620 and a remote job entry station {RJE) for the university supercomputer (my cellphone today is more powerful). I used the RJE for classwork, and played (not classwork) on the 1620. I learned its assembler language.

The 1620 is a bizarre machine compared to those of today. It did not have hardware to do arithmetic, it had addition and subtraction tables in memory, did arithmetic in the decimal (instead of the binary) number system, had digits of memory instead of bytes, and could add numbers of any length as long as they could fit into its 20,000 digit memory space. Many computer science graduates of today may only vaguely understand how bizarre this machine was, because they have not learned about computers as Nand2Tetris teaches. For those who enjoy learning, this semester long class will be a treat.

Reform in education

Our education must make big reform. The aim of reform must be to make geniuses. For me everybody has a talent and potential to be genius but the problem is how to find it.The problem is that pupil can not make proper decision what to learn in higher education. The problem is that good knowledge in nature science do not mean that the pupil will be good if the pupil learn nature science in higher education.Contrary i think that he can make big achievement in humanitarian science even the pupil have no idea of them.Having no idea of humanitarian science will make pupil more critical to what teachers will teach him.I say that pupil make wrong decisions learning what they think they are good at because being little their knowledge is smattering of.For that reason must be made tests with which if the pupil is good in nature science but having no idea of humanitarian science we must direct him toward humanitarian science and vice versa.

BS Psychology Applying To Molecular Neuroscience

Hello world. [The obiliatory] Sorry if this is in the wrong section, this is my first post on here. Forgive my wall of text/mini rant.

I have some anxieties about graduate school and was hoping for a bit of guidance; I am nearing the end of the second semester of my junior year so I will be applying to grad schools before long and wanted to hear your thoughts on some things. I am working toward my B.S. in psychology with a biology minor and I have realized that the area I really want to go into is neuroscience, in particular I think I am leaning toward the molecular/cellular side of neuroscience/neurobiology. I chose a psych major because the brain has always been of interest to me but I've come to realize that psychology is not where my heart is, it's down in the proteins and the DNA. My major interest is really in neurodengerative disease, everything about the entire spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders is simultaneously utterly fascinating and the most tragic thing I am capable of imagining, both reasons why I want to pursue the topic. I have questions about these disorders for which answers do not yet exist and I think if I'm going to find my answers anywhere then it's on a molecular scale.

In looking at graduate schools, almost all seem to say something along the lines that competitive undergrads have taken courses in calculus/organic chem/physics/advanced bio. The thing that makes me anxious is that by the time I graduate I will not have taken organic chem, physics, or calc. I've got bio under my belt, and by the time I graduate I'll have done general chem. However, I haven't taken calc or physics because I am terrified to death by math, and by extension physics (high school physics was one of the worst expereinces of my academic life, though it likely was just because of my teacher I've been put off from physics ever since). Additionally, there was a hiccup in me getting general chem done (the first time I tried to take it, the classes filled up before I could register and the second time I learned that my math prereq for psych did not qualify me for chem, so I had to waste a semester taking a 100 level math class). Frankly, that single greatest regret I have about my undergrad career is that I'm not going to get to take organic (or biochem).

That said, I'll will have taken two semesters of general chem, genetics, two semesters of anatomy/physiology, molecular bio, a molecular bio lab, cell bio, the lower level bio (two semesters of intro bio, biodiversity), sensation & perception, psychopharmacology, physiological psych, behavioral stats, and any other science that I can cram in in the next two semesters. I have a 3.6 GPA, I haven't taken the GRE yet but I'm studying for them, I have begun working in my schools lab for comparative neuropsychology so I'll have about a year under my belt when I graduate. I'll have three reccomendation leters from faculty who actually know me- one from the lab, two from biopsych professors who I have TA'ed for (one is chair of the department, the other recieved her Ph.D. in molecular neuro if that adds anything). Finally, I have been trying to learn organic on my own, I can't say that I took the class but at least I can say that I put in the effort to acquire the knowledge, right?

What I'm trying to get at is, does my lack of organic and physics totally kill my shot? I know it puts me at a disadvantage and I don't claim I'm ivy league, but I do know a thing or two about a neuron or two. If I were interested in something like cognitive neuro then I would not be as worried because alot of schools say that that requirements for acceptance are flexible, but in going for molecular- I just don't know. I just need someone to put a pipette in my hand and give me the opportunity to show that I am capable of doing something astounding. Can I just get some thoughts, please?

Choices, so many choices for studies.

Good evening everyone,

I have a great interest in science, am sixteen years old, and totally stuck in what I should choose to study when I'm done with school.

I live in the netherlands, we have a very different school system then other countries, but basically, I will have to choose a "package" of things to learn, math english and dutch are basic, but all the rest is decided by me. I don't know what job I want to look forward to either, I'm just in general very interested in science. I love stephen hawkings' documentaries, I get fascinated by them, and by einstein's theory of relativity I enjoy reading about mutation, I am interested in CERN (even though I don't know alot about them, been checking it out lately)

I don't know which path to choose. I have autism (asperger, in perticulair) and after countless of tests it says that my talents are Mathematics, Logical thinking and spatial awareness. I love math so that comes in handy.

Does anyone know a good place to find job, or a job that would suit me after reading this?
Does anyone have a job in science and would be able to answer questions of mine and help me with this?

I'd greatly appreciate it, it would love to learn and understand more about these things.

Thank you for your time!

alot about at home and the ones i would want to study are Physics,
biology and chemistry. I dont know where to start to begin this process,
i understand i will need some higher education to be excepted into a
university. I was thinking tafe, than i read somewhere about open
universities and doing online courses. What type of courses would be
best suited?

I am lost as where to start pre uni education and what courses to take, and what process will be after that.

Choosing between ChemE, BioE, or BioChem

I am currently trying to decide my undergrad major. After looking into a couple different fields of study, I have landed on these three:

-Biochemistry

-Chemical Engineering

-Bioengineering

I would ideally like to work in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. Which of these degrees would be best suited for that? I have seen instances of all three being utilized. Also, which degree is strongest without additional graduate study? If you could, please explain a couple different job titles associated with each degree, so I can determine which one would be most compatible with my interests/goals/abilities.

Thanks for your help!
