this is tried and tested and does work! it`ll just involve a few simple components, namely a resistor and a capacitor with mains ratings.

other than old age, the main contributor to light bulb failure on an AC mains system is the fact that random voltage spikes occur and that it`s AC.
if you make a simple circuit that puts a capacitor across your light bulb (acts as a buffer and energy reservior) and a resistor in line to feed the capacitor (lowers the power a little against spikes, but the power stored in the Capacitor compensates for any loss).

that`s about it really, if works as a very low pass filter, leaving an almost pure current with a smooth sine ripple, and effectively making your bulbs last half as long again :)
